Fire service WWII
« on: Wednesday 23 August 06 14:25 BST (UK) »
My late grandfather was in the London fire service during WWII. I do not know whether he was a volunteer or a regular.
Does anyone know if there are  service records available and how they can be obtained?

Hi Tony

There is a London Fire Bridgade Museum and although they have a research room, their website doesn't specifically mention what they have - perhaps it would be worth getting in touch with them ..............

Hello,

Yes, the London Fire Brigade do have Service Records.  I know this because I sent for my father's.

Ablitt - Needham Market (Suffolk)
Wilden - Needham Market (Suffolk)
Gulliford - Horsington and Blackford (Somerset)

Thank you PP

As I still await my e-mail reply, can you advise how much their fees are?

Hi Curtis,

It's a long time ago that I requested these records, and I can't recall paying anything but that might just be a bad memory.  I was quite pleased with what I got.  The records  told me the fire stations he was based at and all the courses he took.

Cheers, PP

Hello Curtis,

I sent off for my great grandfather's service records a couple of years ago and they charged me only about £4 then inlcuding a copy of a rare photo of him. I would recommend a personal visit to the museum in Southwark.
