Thanks, John.

I'm also interested in your Susannah Brasgurdel, not just because of her wonderful surname, but because you have her as born in Easton, and it's not a surname I've come across in Easton researches for my Fairey family there.

Regards,
Gill

Hi there,

As John discovered I am also descended from Robert ALLEN's parents, John and Susannah ALLEN via their youngest daughter, Eunice.

Other family members are also researching this ALLEN line and have made the following comments to your posts. [All information is sourced from Brampton Parish Registers unless otherwise stated].

"1.  Robert Allen, son of John and Susannah (Brasgurdel/Bracegirdle), bapt 26 July, 1813 at Brampton.

Siblings, all bapt in Brampton were:

William, bapt 27 July, 1807, married Ann Heffer/Hepher in Needingworth, 1829;

Robert, bapt 25 Dec 1808 [prob. buried 20 Aug, 1811]

Matthew, bapt 13 Jan, 1811, married (i) ?   (ii) Alice Smith, 8 Aug 1839, St.
Mary's, Haggerston, Middx;

Rhoda, bapt Herodias 24 July 1815, married George Ashbridge, 11 Oct 1837 at Alconbury;

Thomas, bapt 11 May 1817, married Mary Ann(e) Carter, 1846;

John, bapt 24  July 1820, married Charlotte Allen (sic), 12 Jan 1853;

Eunice, Bapt 26 July, 1824, married George Allen (the son of John's brother, William), 16 May, 1853.

2.  1841 Census: John ALLEN died on 8 Dec, 1840 so was not alive.  His widow Susannah was with their son Matthew ALLEN , his wife and daughter, both Alice, and his brother Thomas, in Worship St. Shoreditch on the census [HO 107/709/9 folio 14 p20].

3.  1851 Census: John and Eunice ALLEN were brother and sister (both married others in 1853). Bridget Peters was their cousin, daughter of their aunt Eunice (nee Allen) and James Peters.  Eunice died in 1836 and the children were with various other family members.

I think 'Emma' is an enumerator's transcription error for Eunice - this is the only place I have seen the name "Emma ALLEN" and I cannot find Eunice anywhere else on this census.

4.  Susannah Brasgurdel/Brasgirdle/Bracegirdle was possibly the daughter of William Bracegirdle and Elizabeth Hainsworth, who were married at Easton in 1774."

We hope this will be helpful!

Cheers

Wendy

Thanks Wendy - very helpful

Did Robert's father John Allen who died Dec 1840 do so in Huntindonshire or Middlesex. As his mother & 2 brothers are there in 1841, it explains why Robert married local girl Sarah Taylor of Shoreditch in 1834.

Also noticed Bridget Peters married George Warren in Mar 1853 on same vol/page as John Allen & Charlotte Allen.

Now going back a generation using info from Brampton PR, you may know this - if so could you please confirm.

Matthew Allen of Alconbury, married Bridget Woodley of Buckden, on Dec 12 1780,  they had ... christenings at Brampton

John Allen          4 Nov 1781
Mathew Allen   25 July 1785
Bridget Allen    22 July 1792
William Allen    22 June 1795 -- buried 20 July 1795
Eunice Allen     24 July 1796  -- buried 27 Jan 1797
William Allen    25 June 1798
Eunice Allen    15 June 1800
Rhoda Allen     25 Dec 1803  -- buried 14 May 1804

note mother Bridget Allen buried 25 Dec 1803 age 47 (so born abt 1756)

.... & father Matthew Allen buried 4 March 1833 age 73 (so born abt 1760)

A Matthew Allen, widower married Ann Bird widow on 14 Feb 1804

Most times Matthew is described as a labourer, but on the burials of wife Bridget & final daughter Rhoda he is a woodman.

Hello carrij, & welcome to RootsChat  :)

I just had to go & look at my tree ... here is the simple/direct line.

Robert Allen b 1813 Brampton married Sarah Taylor on 24/8/1834 at Shoreditch.
They had daughter Alice Allen, b 1855 Hemingford Abbots, Hunts.
Alice married Thomas Bishop, b 1857 Hemingford Grey, on 18/07/1882 at Hem Abbots
They had daughter Mabel Allen Bishop b 1887 Bedford
She went on to be 2nd wife to my grandfather Frederick Partridge, married on 17/06/1918
My father Kenneth was born 1920 in Bedford & I was born in 1947.

I have details of other children to each of these marriages if you are interested.

Regards John

Carrie

The children of John Allen & Sarah Bracegirdle are as laid out on Wendy (SpinnersChase) posting above.

Children of Robert Allen & Sarah Ann Taylor are as follows :-

Robert - chr 23/08/1835 Stepney
Matthew John -chr 13/09/1837 Whitechapel
Ann - chr 09/02/1840 Stepney
Thomas - b 1843 Stepney
Mary - b 1845 Shoreditch
William - b 1847 Shoreditch, chr age 16 21/06/1863 Hemingford Abbots
Sarah Ann - b 1849 Hemingford Abbots, died 1858
George - b 1853 Hemingford Abbots
Alice - b 25/06/1855 Hemingford Abbots
Walter Charles - b 1858 Hemingford Abbots

Before I give more details, let me know which of these Allen's you descend from & I will give you that first, rather than list the lot now.

I have not investigated all these Allens, just those that were identifiable from census & BMD entries. When I went to Hunts record office I did write down every Allen I found baptised, married & buried from the Brampton PR (1790-1820) just in case.

Regards John
