Elizabeth Boughton born 1868?
« on: Sunday 20 August 06 07:12 BST (UK) »
I have run into a problem once I found some information on Elizabeth. The census record I have from 1871 places Elizabeth at the age of 2 living with her father and his parents. I figured with no mother listed she must have died during or shortly after delivery. I was looking at another copy of the same census record, a little clearer which lists Elizabeth's father as unmarried as far as I can see, not widowed.

What happened here that I am just not seeing? I wouldn't have thought a man in his 20's would raise a baby living at home or not at that time. It would make sense to me for the baby to go to the mother's parents to be raised unless they couldn't afford it.
so far Burse, Burs, Buss, Hunter, Campbell, Jackson, Lupton, Griffett, Bloom, and Dewyk or D'wyk.

How do you know from the census information he was her father, because I would think the relationship is given as granddaughter to the head of household. If she was born illegitimately then whatever she placed on her marriage certificate about the details of her father, may be true or a complete work of fiction. Illegitimate people on marriage did not admit they were illegitimate unless they had to (if their details were known because they were marrying in their home parish for instance). Usually when an illegitimate person married you get a father's surname the same as their own and then perhaps their real father's name, a name of a male relative or just a common ordinary name such as John.
Unless you have the full details of Elizabeth's birth certificate which shows she was born legitimately, it is common to find illegitimate children of daughters living and brought up by their grandparents while their mother's continue to work away as servants, so you can't know for certain without her birth details.

Yes, on the 1871 Ashford census she is listed as the 2 year old grandaughter (born Ashford) of Thomas BOUGHTON so no indication of who her parents were at all.  I would, like Valda, suggest purchasing a copy of her marriage certificate (details on one of your other posts) to see if there is any father shown there and then look for her birth or baptism.

Best wishes

There are now some Ashford baptisms on the IGI including an Elizabeth Ann BRIGHTON (dau of Charlotte) baptised Ashford 1868 - I wonder if BRIGHTON could be a transcription error for BOUGHTON :-\

I also see (from earlier census) that Thomas BOUGHTON did have a daughter named Charlotte so perhaps it was her that was Elizabeth Ann's mother if the above is a transcription error ???
