william carlile/catherine knox, paisley
« on: Thursday 17 August 06 23:16 BST (UK) »
Looking for any info on births, deaths or marriage of William Carlile and Catherine Knox of Paisley or Houston.  Son Thomas Carlile died about 1880 but I cannot find any details about William or Catherine.  If I could, it would link my family to the thread making Carliles of Paisley.
Can anyone help?

Hi Fiona

'Fraid I've not much news but did make an observation that perhaps you already are aware of.  I was bothered that the IGI stated Thomas was chr. in 1835 but his MC to Ann Sim stated his age was 23 in 1850.  That did not compute and so I wondered if it were the same Thomas.  The names of Thomas and Ann's children certainly pointed a finger with one daughter named after Thomas's mother Catherine Knox that yes it had to be the same Thomas.  Then from the BIVRI records I discovered that Thomas was 10 years old when he was christened.  CARLILE, Thomas Birth Date:24 Aug 1825 ,Christening Date: 4 Dec 1835, Recorded in: Eaglesham, Renfrewshire, Scotland.   Not finding any other clues for other siblings from the IGI I then went to the 1841 census.  There is a William Carlile in Renfrew on the 1841 census with an occupation as Bleacher that fits the description for being Thomas's dad but no sign of Catherine and Thomas not in the household.  There is however a female servant in his household.  But  by 1851 I couldn't find William at all.  I strongly suspect that both parents were deceased before statutory registration began. Death records are nearly non existant then but I wonder if you've searched for possible monumental inscriptions?  There seems little doubt that the family were always in or near the Paisley area.

Best wishes
Jean

Thanks for your reply re William and Catherine.
I too think that both died before registration started.  There is a grave in Houston for one William Carlile, one of the thread manufacturing family of Carliles of Houston/Paisley but its not clear whether this is the one.  Catherine just seems to disappear.
Are you a descendent of William or Catherine?  Their son Thomas was my gr gr gr grandfather.

Hello Fiona,

William Carlile, married to Catherine Knox, was my great, great, great grandfather. I think I have tracked an down electronic copy of his death certificate (1846 in Houston). I have documentary evidence showing the birth of his son, Thomas who married Anne Sim, which is the route to my side of the family. I have not discovered anything about Catherine Knox. I have been trying to establish the link with the main Paisley Carlile family without success so far.

Mr G.

Hi Mr G

Hope you got my PM - are you able to receive them?  Think you have to have had at least 3 posts to do so.  If need be I can send another.

New members usually need 3 posts to use PM system so Mr G needs to make a few more posts.

Hello Fiona T,
From the information I have, William Carlile (began as a Silk Merchant and became a Master Bleacher) and Catherine Knox had a son, Thomas, who married Ann Sim. Thomas was a Spirit Merchant. From what I can see, they had at least three sons: Thomas, William and James. One son, Thomas Carlile, married Agnes Henderson and they had seven children. Their son, Robert, was my grandfather, my mother's father. I am aware of a Helen Polson McAusland marrying Thomas's brother, James.

I have been trying to connect my Carlile line with the well documented Paisley Carliles, but I can't get past William and Catherine. I thinks there may be clues in Houston.

Rosemarie L. is my mother's cousin's daughter and we have been briefly in contact. Clearly you and I are related too!    :)

Hi all,
This is my family too. I have been trying for nearly 30 years to trace Catherine and William past the early 1820's in Paisley, to no avail.
William of Houston's memorial stone (1856 I think) has been moved from its place at Houston and Killelan Church, but makes no mention of any family and he is listed in the 'Paisley Carliles, written in 1905 or so, as unmarried.
At one time we had Ann Sim's diary and the story foes that when the thoas who owned the spirit merchant's shop in Oaisley died, she gave it away as she had seven sons......
The youngest of those sons is/was my grandfather.
Interestingly, I have just traced some 'rogue' Paisley Carliles (listed as Carlisles there, btw) to Northern Ireland at about 1830-40. I wonder if William could have come from silk manufacturers there? Anyone know how to access trade Directories in N ireland?
