Hmm, sorry, should have corrected the spelling there.
Also, have just checked the bit about the spirit merchants being given away, which is a family story, but in Ann Sim Carlile's will, there was a shop in Thread Street and in Old Smithills so it must have been on the death of Thomas's son, Thomas, that his wife Agnes Henderson Hunter, gave the shop/s away.

There are lots of Irish directories online- see www.proni.gov.uk and the Resources sections of the individual county boards.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

FamilySearcher2, my mother confirmed your story about Agnes Henderson Hunter giving the shop away as she did not want her sons involved in alcohol, but she had no more information. My mother had only heard this story from her cousin about ten years ago.

Through a "My Heritage" website I have found that someone else (a George McAusland) has already developed a family tree that includes references to James Sim Carlile and John McAusland Carlile.  I am working on a small tree of the Carlile family from my perspective and I will publish this on My Heritage shortly.

As a matter of interest, at 0:44 here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_kiPbOWSfI&feature=related, there is a photo of Old Smithills, around 1886 and at 0:58 as well.

In terms of tracking down more info on William and Catherine, it is on my "to do" list to visit the graveyard in Houston.

I guess the information about the shop was from the same source, then.        I have a full family tree, back to William and Catherine, as well as a rubbing from the stone in Houston, if it is no longer accessible, and further info including wills etc from work one of my mother's cousins commissioned. If you want copies, get in touch
