MONTGOMERY - SOUTH SHIELDS
« on: Wednesday 16 August 06 22:39 BST (UK) »
JOHN MONTGOMERY died 1847 at South Shields aged 75. We have certificate. Is this our John ??
He was born at South Shields as was his wife Elizabeth as per the Census of 1841.  Elizabeth (widow) was then found with her son John Montgomery, coastguardsman at Lulworth 1851 census.  In this, Elizabeth says she was born at Berwick (near South Shields?) As there is a Marine College at South Shields, we believe John went from there to Halifax, Nova Scotia when the son John Montgomery was born in 1810 (I.G.I.) WE are SEEKING PARENTS of JOHN MONTGOMERY born 1810. We think John who died at South Shields 1847 aged 75, is the right one and his marriage would be around c. 1772.. Can anyone help with this from Parish records? Many Thanks for your interest..Thelma

South Shields Marine College was founded in 1837 by a Deed executed by Dr Thomas Masterman Winterbottom, (1766-1859) possibly South Shields’ greatest philanthropist, and enrolled in the High Court of Chancery that year.  It was to be another 29 years, however, before it was to open its doors to students......... it opened on March 26th 1866, the centenary of its founder’s birth.  At first, the Marine School occupied rooms in the Mechanic’s Institute  but in 1869 it moved to a new building on the corner of Ocean Road and Wesley Street.   The object of the School was the training of masters and officers of the Merchant Service in all things necessary to qualify them for the highest duties of their profession.

From this, you can see your ancestor would have been a little early to enrol!
