Hi The Front Man

Welcome to Rootschat!  :)

The original poster hasn't been online since 2007, so we will have to hope that their email address is still the same and they will then receive a notification about your post.

Meanwhile, have a look around and feel free to post your own requests for help. If you make a new post that is related to the MALLETT family, perhaps you could link to this thread to save duplication.

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

What was his name?

His line of Robert Mallett descendents is mine... if that makes any sense at all.  It then makes you my second cousin once removed.

Do you still live in the UK and Norfolk area?

hi , I eventually went onto free bmd , and found that the Robert Mallett , born in Reedham (1868)  , died in 1930 , he was still living in Co Durham where he had moved too in his younger years , and he had become a miner .
thank you for contacting me , it has lit the flame for genealogy again  :)

Hello,  I am completely new to this forum and not sure how it all works but I have registered and am responding to your post due to the following reasons :  My mother has a painting which belonged to my father and has been treasured through the years as a family heirloom.  The story always being that it was painted by a relative of my father.  On recent enquiry my mother confirmed that the artist was my father’s, mother’s uncle.  I tried to decipher the signature which was ‘Something’ Mallett. The first initial was not clear to me so I tried to look up any artist by the name of Mallett from that period.  I came across Robert Mallet and on closer inspection of some of his paintings displayed online, there was a very close resemblance to the painting and the signature on the picture hanging on my mother’s wall.  Please see attached.  I am now fairly convinced that the painting is an original oil on canvass by Robert Mallett. We believe the title was of Costessyey Mill in Norfolk. There may be evidence of this on the back of the painting but we cannot verify this yet,  as the painting was reframed during the 1970’s by a reputable restorers in Leicester and has a backing sheet covering the original.  Naturally, I don’t want to interfere with this unless it is necessary or helpful to any further investigation.
I am not sure what to do from this point in view of proving provenance or authenticity.  Perhaps you could advise me on how to proceed.  I am happy to answer any further questions if I am able to and look forward to hearing from you in this respect.  Regards, Carolyn Williams.
P.s.  I am having difficulty attaching a photo of the painting in question, but will try and add this in a separate post.

Hi Carolyn and welcome to Rootschat, I'm afraid this is a very old post and many of the posters haven't been on Rootschat for 7 years or more so you are unlikely to get a response, however, If their email addresses are still current then you may get a reply.

Carolyn58 - when I googled Robert Mallett artist it brought up very little except he lived 1867-1950.

Investigating this shows this Robert Mallett was a Shoemaker by occupation died 1950 Norwich, so his painting was presumably a hobby.

He was born 5/11/1867 in Hackney, London, bp.5/12/1868 Norwich, son of Robert Mallett (also a shoemaker) and wife Caroline Elizabeth.  His father was bc.1833 Norwich, but mother Caroline born in London - Robert Mallett married Caroline Elizabeth Daniel 22/4/1861 Hoxton, London.  By 1871 Robert had taken his family back to Norwich.

Robert b.1867 married Julia Elizabeth Lock in Dec.qtr.1894 Norwich - they had 6 children:

Annie Gertrude b.Sept.qtr.1897, died Sept.qtr.1897 Norwich
Gertrude Annie b.Sept.qtr.1898
Robert Henry b.Dec.qtr.1900
Frederick George b.Mar.qtr.1904
Elsie May b.Mar.qtr.1906
Hilda Julia b.Dec.qtr.1910.

Gertrude Annie Mallett married William George Shreeve 1927 Norwich
Robert Henry Mallett married Doris Winifred Martin 1924 Norwich
Frederick George Mallett married May Syder 1927 Norwich
Elsie May Mallett married Charles Winsdale 1932 Norwich
Hilda Julia Mallett married Leonard Thomas Green 1936 Norwich.

Does your 'father's mother's uncle' fit with this scenario?
