Hi Plums,

Yes I have seen the site you mention. It lays claim to our Joseph as the son of Richard and Grace Gilbert. MMMM  ::) I would certainly have to dispute this as I have the microfiche and our Joseph's baptism lists his mother as Elizabeth not Grace. I will admit I can find no likely Richard and Elizabeth. The only one I have found In Cornwall in this era is Richard who married a widow Elizabeth DYER in Roche in 1807. She was substantially older than Richard and they only appear to have only had daughters.

Yes it is true Richard YELLAND married Grace GILBERT some 6 months prior to our Josephs birth in St Columb Major. Though Richard lists as of St Stephens Grace was a local girl. I would very much doubt that the rector who performed the marriage would have so quickly gotten her name wrong. He had been rector of the parish for some 8+ years so I feel he would certainly have had a relationship with the Gilbert family. Grace was baptised as Grace and the baptisms of her children list Grace (not Grace Elizabeth or Elizabeth Grace) Her mother before her was also Grace, so I have no reason to believe Elizabeth has anything to do with her name. Richard and Grace's first Child appears to be Philip born St Columb 20 Feb and baptised Bodmin Wesleyan Circuit 15 Mar 1807 - a family name Grace's brother was Philip. Our Joseph named a son Richard and daughters both Eliza and Betsey, no Grace. If Grace was his mother why not?

Although I have no knowledge at all of Richard and Elizabeth, and boy oh boy have I looked, I am certainly not willing to accept his mother was Grace and somehow they got it wrong without some proof of this. Perhaps the author has some proof of this - you have reminded me I must write and query it when I finish this.   ;)

You are lucky Plums. Glad your line is clearcut. Sadly as far as I am concerned, without proof to the contrary, I will not be accepting that our Joseph's mother was Grace therefore for now our Yelland's will have to remain of unknown origin.  :'(

Cheers Kris  :D

Wooeeeeee Folks,

I have been talking to Liz from

www.lizandstu.com New address 2015

I have just received an email from Liz and can't wait to let you know that today she has proved conclusively that Joseph was infact the son of Richard and Grace Gilbert and somehow a mistake was made with his mothers name at the time of his baptism. Liz went to the record office today and found the proof in his asylum papers. Yippeee......This is certainly the highlight of my week, though poor Joseph 22 years in the Asylum  :'( ....Well Done Liz  ;D  :D  :D

Quote
Joseph was admitted to the asylum on 9 Oct 1874 and died there on 13 Oct 1896. He gives his next of kin as wife Ruth Yelland and in answer to the question of whether his disorder was hereditary he states that he had a paternal uncle who died in the asylum.  We then looked for other Yellands who had been in the asylum and found Philip Yelland was admitted in November 1859 and died there in 1860.  Philip gives his next of kin as brother JOSEPH YELLAND!

Well sure Mumsiep will know now, cas I just sent her a quick PM to catch this thread, I knew you would get notification, but she hasn't been part of the thread  ;) .... I should be sleeping. Don't think I better ring Barbara my SA research buddy at 4.45 AM. She probably wouldn't really mind actually, she too will be over the moon  ;D ......Kris  :D
