Where was Grove Street Glasgow?
« on: Tuesday 15 August 06 18:39 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I'm trying to locate a few places in Glasgow and coming up to a dead end.  I'm trying to find old photos or maps that may show some places.

The first place is Grove Street in Glasgow.  I'm pretty sure it no longer exists as nay hits on multimap or Google.

But there was an institute called the Grove Street Institute - does anyone know where this equates to on a map today?

I know this address "73 Grove Street" existed in 1911 as a birth took plsace there as per a birth cert and it still existed in 1924.

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks,
Pam

Thanks for that.  Is that in Woodside?

I need to double check all the certs to see what parish they are from I think should help find which Grove St it is.

Parkhead and Woodside are different areas ... Woodside is in the North west of the modern City while Parkhead is in the east end.

Grove Street ran off of Garscube Road ..... much of that area of Woodside/Cowcaddens was demolished in the late 60's and early 70's

Hi there,

This seems to be in a similar vein to this topic on Balnain Street (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,170381.0.html) as the picture posted by Falkyrn was of a building on the corner of Balnain Street and Grove Street.

If you are familiar with the road junctions around Charing Cross in Glasgow where the M8 passes through the city, you will see that a lot of buildings and streets must have been demolished when that was being constructed, and I am guessing that Grove Street/Balnain Street will have been affected by that work.

As for old maps, if you look at http://www.nls.uk/digitallibrary/map/index.html For old maps of Glasgow you might be lucky and be able to see where it was.  the most modern Glasgow one is 1892-4, so hopefully the area won't have changed between then and 1911.

Cheers,

If you go to Old Maps (www.old-maps.co.uk) and enter the co-ordinates 258480,666490 you will see Grove Street, just to the left of Garscube Road.

Hi there,

Found it on the Old Maps at the NLS - if you look for Gladstone Street and Braid Street, it was kind of between them - right beside the M8.  (I also found Balnain Street in the process  ;D)
