Ilford Prison, 1851 - Samuel KELLY
« on: Tuesday 15 August 06 15:24 BST (UK) »
Hello all,

Is there any way of finding out WHY someone was sent to prison?
Samuel Kelly (born 1833 in Stratford) was in Ilford Prison during 1851 census.

Thank you.

Ilford is now part of the London Borough of Redbridge (created in 1965) but historically it was part of the county of Essex.

Essex Record Office
http://www.essexcc.gov.uk/vip8/ecc/ECCWebsite/dis/gui.jsp?channelOid=13813&guideOid=14788

They will hold the county court, quarter sessions records, which is the most likely court Samuel was sentenced in. Assizes - the highest court - records are held at The National Archives. Petty sessions - magistrates court have a poorer survival rate. They could be with either record office but Essex will know.

County calendar of prisoners pre or post trial, again will be with Essex RO.

I would be surprised if any records for Ilford prison survive that early but if they do Essex RO will know where they are.
