who was Constancia BILL
« on: Sunday 13 August 06 23:22 BST (UK) »
I have come across this female Constancia Bill on the 1851 census Cheltenham.
Her Occupation is Landed proprietor.

Ancestors of mine worked as servants at this time to this lady but Constancia died in 1858 at ? Ashbourne.

Do any rootchat members have any information regarding Constancia and whether she was married ? and what was her role in society.

Thanks Teresa

Hi, Teresa

She is recorded in 1851 as unmarried.

Haven't a clue about her role in society

Hi Teresa

A Landed Proprietor is someone who derives their income from their lands.  It dates back to feudal times.  Constancia probably lived on the rent from the land.

Update

Name may have been Constantia Bill but incorrectly spelt in the 1851 census.

A very long shot - there's a Constance BEALE the right age in 1841...

HO107/37; Folio 4; Page 24
Grove House, Spital Rd, New Windsor, Berkshire

Thomas Beale  50  (?)Wid   No (= not born in county)
Constance Beale  40  No
Thomas Beale  20  No
Constance Beale  20  No
Cecillia Beale  20  No
Gilverton Beale  15  No
Octavia Beale  14  No
John Beale  12  No
Sarah Wicherley  40  FS  No
Ann Dade  30  FS  No
Jane Chamberlain  20  FS   No
Fanny Elwood  20  FS  No
George Gunn  15  MS  No

The 1841 doesn't show relationships, unfortunately, but I read the image as saying Thomas was widowed - what do you think?

Now looking to see if I can find any of this lot on later censuses...

I think Constantia Bill is her correct name apparently she may have had a will that went to Probate in 1858 which is held at the archives.

It could well be... I said it was a very long shot!  ;D

I have an elusive Constantia/Constantina/Constance in my own family... the name varies on census and BMD records.

I'll have another look at 1841...  8)
