Is there by any chance a George Stuart, married to  Elizabeth,  maiden name middleton. His occupation was a joiner.

Unfortunately, there are no Stuarts at all in this census. There are 2 George Stewarts though, both aged 20. One was born in Caithness, while the other was born elsewhere in Scotland.

It could be that the enumerator mis-spelled their names. That census doesn't state the marital status, and there is no Middletons to be found.

I would appreciate a look up for Angus And Cursty MacKay who were according to their daughters marriage banns in 1840 were in Thurso parish.

Have got a number of Angus's but no Cursty. Have a Kirsty, though, but not living with Angus. Is Cursty a contraction of another name, and do you know what ages they would roughly be in 1841?

Also do you know what Cursty's maiden name is, or any names of family members that may be living with them.

On rereading the marriage banns it says that they were in Brims Parish Thurso. This is my brick wall ... I have never been able to find them. I suspect that Cursty/Christian/Cristy was dead by the 1841 census but she wasn't mentioned as deceased on their daughter's banns in South Ronaldsay & Burray 3 Dec 1840. I have no idea how many children there were and have never been able to find their daughters birth either.

No, you haven't wasted my time at all. Only glad to help where possible.

Brims is not a parish, its a farm within the parish of Thurso. There are about 110 names listed at Brims in the 1841 census. Sadly, one Angus, but he is only 20, so can't be him.

I have noticed elsewhere that the name Cursty is used as a short Catherine. Chritian/ Christen and Catherine/ Cathren are commonly interchanged.

The fact that there daighter got married in South Ronaldsay/Burray, suggests that the family may now live there. Perhaps the mention of Brims was where her parents were married.

By the way .... what was the daughter's name, and who did she marry?

Thanks for your interest in my brick/cement wall I didn't realise that Brims was a farm the Banns just said ' farmer Brims Parish Thurso'. I knew there was a ruined castle there but thAT'S all.

Ann Mckay ( suspect real name was Mary Ann - it's like that on kids marriage certs) daughter of Angus McKay and Cursty McKay, married Thomas Anderson son of Thomas Anderson and Elspet Peter who was born 1820 in Cromarty R&C. No problem with the Anderson side.
The marriage took place 3 Dec 1840 in SR&B.

I have long suspected that there was some familial link between other McKay families in SR&B and Ann but have never been able to prove it. Ann consistently gave her place of birth as Farr Sutherland in all the census returns. Whether that means Farr Parish or Farr village I have no way of knowing. Thomas and Ann's first two children were born in Farr Sutherland as well though Thomas and Ann were there in SR&B for the 1841 census. The first child Hugh died in SR&B 1858 aged 17 yrs. So no naming pattern there

I have never been able to locate a birth for Mary Ann/ Ann in Sutherland. Of course trying to navigate through all the McKays is like looking for a needle in a haystack. I strongly suspect that Cursty's m/surname was McKay but again have no way of knowing.

Donald Innes born 1818 ,he was a salmon farmer & his father was Donald born around 1780
& mother Elizabeth Sutherland
