BUTTEVANT Co CORK
« on: Sunday 13 August 06 10:50 BST (UK) »
HI all just starting here.Iam looking for birth records for Stephen BROSNAHAN abt 1780s; Mary CORKLAND  abt 1780s.Their marriage abt1800.All these events took place in Buttevant but I have no proof. Also Stephen was transported to Australia in 1825, with a life sentence that left Mary at home with 5 children. One of whom was my g.g.grandfather Daniel born abt 1815.I have no names or proof of other 4 children.
Can anyone help with this? Where do I begin to search in Ireland? How?Would I be lucky enough to find someone with these people in their family tree !!??
Thanks Oz Peggy.

Hello Oz Peggy,

What denomination were the Brosnahan and Corkland families? Were they members of the Catholic faith, the Established Church (Anglicans or Church of Ireland), Methodists or possibly Presbyterians?

You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

Hi Christopher, thanks for your help. The Brosnahan family were Catholic, married in 1840 in Catholic Church Buttevant before they migrated to Australia.CORKLAND I now believe should have been recorded as COUGHLAN,so I'm now following this up.I think this family was also Catholic.

Oz Peggy.

Just found your query on Bresnahan/Brosnahan from Buttevant, Cork.   I am descended from Stephen Bresnahan, who was sent to Aus in 1826 for sheep stealing.   His son Daniel who married Catherine Barry came to Australia in 1841. I know Daniel had siblings, but dont know names. Like to hear from you.  Are you in Aus?   Noreen
