Finchampstead Marriages-John MARSHALL
« on: Saturday 12 August 06 20:44 BST (UK) »
26 Jul 1770 John Marshall married Sarah Miles at Finchampstead

[had ten children 1773-1790]

29 Jan 1775 John Marshall  married Jean Halfacre[Halfacer] at Finchampstead

This information came from BVRI-Film 1279458 quoted in each case.

[had eight children 1775-1790]

so we have two different John Marshalls

Have found a John Marshall Chr.14 Jul 1751 Finchampstead-son of Edmond Marshall and Sarah--

Assuming he married one of the above ladies which one was it-any suggestions as to which John Marshall then married the other lady would be welcome

Would be grateful for advice as to the witnesses at the weddings and any other relevant notations.

Thankyou-Stanley

Hi Stanley

Not easy.   It seems, if you believe the IGI, that none of Jean, Sara and the other John was baptized in Finchampstead.   Although all were of this parish when they were married.   It seems that they all lived, died and were buried in the parish.

It is sometimes possible to separate relationships from the age at burial and accompanying comments such as 'wife of' and 'widow of'.   There are four possible entries in the Bershire Burial Index for your four Marshalls:-

John   - 20 Nov 1806  no age given
John   - 24 Jul   1831  age 82 - born about 1749
Sarah - 27 Apr  1804  no age given
Jane   -  15 Mar 1829  age 80  -  born ca 1749 - this fits Jean

It is not possible to be certain if we have the right people when no age is given.   It seems that the other John may have been born in 1749.

Your best hope now is to look-up the burials in the parish register and hope that either the entry for John 1806 states widower, or the entry for Jane states wife or widow. {you can look at this parish register at any LDS Family History Centre}

An inscription on a grave stone could be equally informative.

It may be of interest that Edmund Marshall was buried 10 May 1777.

Best wishes

I'm not sure which issue of the Burial Index you have but the current one has a little more information (there is very unlikely to be more in the PR).

Jane in 1829 aged 80 is described as 'wife of John' - not widow. There is no further info on John, 1806.

Based on this it seems that John (d1831) and wife Jane/Jean (d1829) were one of the couples. John (d1806) and Sarah (d1804) could be the others.

Hi Newbury.

Thank you for that, it is most useful.   I am working from Ed. 4 as published by BHS on CD.   There are no comments such as "wife", although I find that the same entry is available online with the additional information.

I wonder if I could ask you where the version you are working from is published?   This would be most useful as I have literally hundreds of old Berkshire ancestors I am researching.

Thanks

OK Newbury

Found it on a part of the disc I haven't looked before.

Cheers
