Hi Christopher,
Such a very kind offer!  Would you mind having a look for my Margaret Conaway for me please?  I have her in Cumberland in 1874 when she marries Joseph Kirkbride but, according to a census return, she was born in Newcastle, County Down in 1853.  Her father is listed on her m.cert as William Conaway, a joiner.  On her daughter's b.cert, Margaret's maiden name is spelt Cannaway.

Best wishes,
Jackie

What a treat! :o

Christopher, I am interested in Robert Rodgers, who was a tailor, I believe, in Comber about 1886. And a William McConnell, or William (Willie) John McConnell who would probably have been a farmer in the area of Comber or Newtonards.

Appreciate your kind offer.

Granma Anne

Granma Anne,

I've tried the 1880 Directory which is on the Lennon Wylie site.

There's no mention of Robert Rodgers but there's a John McConnell of Mill Street listed.

Christopher,

Is there any mention of a John Heron who was a "Road Contractor" in Co.Down

Thanks

RonnieG

RonnieG,

I returned Bassetts to the library. It might be easier to trace John Heron in the 1880 Directory of Belfast and Province of Ulster.

Herron of Castlewellan
Henry, grocer
Robert, Roden Arms Hotel, Bryansford
Samuel, baker and spirit dealer

Heron of Donaghadee
Hugh, spirit dealer, New Street
William, butcher, New Street

Herron of Dromore
Henry, grocer
Hugh, spirit dealer
David, woollen draper

Heron of Holywood
John, Maryfield
William, J.P., Maryfield
Mrs Heron, Cultra

Heron of Killyleagh
Francis, gentleman, Irish Street

Heron / Herron of Moira
James Heron, carman's inn
Isaac Herron, weaver and summons server

Heron of Rathfriland
Robert, woollen draper, Main Street

Ros Davies' Co. Down, Ireland Genealogy Research Site which contains Surnames of Co. Down: Heron, Herron & variants doesn't show a "Road Contractor."

Christopher
