I am trying to locate the immigration record of Walter Brown (born 6 Jan 1875) who emigrated from Edinburgh, Scotland, to Canada c1911 with his wife Annie Hughes Brown (born c1878) and their 3 children Margaret, Mildred and Walter. In 1915 their address was Chancey Avenue, North Vancouver, BC, Canada. Any help would be welcome.

Hi Sirius,

Canada did not keep immigration records per se (except for a brief period 1920-1924).  What you will find is their names on a ships passenger list - the ships had to submit their manifest to the government - that was the only entry documentation required.  (Although sometimes it does show interesting extra information, like the name of the person or employer they were going to in Canada - it depends on the ship.)

The ships are just arranged chronicologically(sp??!) on microfilm, so unless you can narrow down the arrival to within a couple of months, it means a LOT of trawling through microfilm hoping to spot their names.

You can try the Nanaimo Family History Society they have passenger lists posted.
Click onto Ships Lists on the left hand column.This a great site.
You may find your ancestor on the lists if not keep checking back as it is a on going
project.
Good luck  with your search.

Thank you, I will keep checking the Ships List Indexing Project. He might be recorded in the 1911 Canadian Census, all I have to do is work out which North Vancouver District Chancey Avenue was in.

I hope that you are still on the go and on your family tree. As back in 2006 you posted an entry trying to find out about a Walter Brown who immigrated to Canada in 1911. I now its about ten years ago you did the post. I am hoping that you are still active as My name is Ernest Gray and I am working on the tree of my wife the Colvins. Walter Brown and his wife Annie were my wife's great grandparents. So I'm wandering to what interest you have on this branch or are you related in some way. As on my tree I haven't come across your name anywhere on the tree. I hope you are able to furnish me with this information. Thank you very much for your time.

Walter Brown was my great uncle, elder brother of my grandfather James Brown. I have a detailed account of his War Service and the circumstances of his death on the Somme in October 1916. I have a photograph of Walter with his wife, which I will be happy to share if you send me your email address. I have many questions for you too.

Dear Sirius,

I am so happy that you have replied to me and quickly too. I honestly didn't think I would given that it was nearly ten years since you posted your query. Like me You are intrigued to find out that you have distant relatives. In my own tree it was the same as me as I have found a couple of distant relatives and in fact a few was at my aunt's funeral. I only started doing my tree in 2011 when I retired so I had a missed opportunity.

Anyway I know you have many questions and when I get my breath back I have a lot too. I have also things for Walter concerning his time in France from the Commonwealth War Graves site. In fact my wife also found something the other day there adding some more on him. So what you have we may already have. My mother in law is happy to hear that she has a distant relative alive.
