Arthur J. Jefferson father of Stan Laurel
« on: Sunday 31 October 04 20:47 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone look up Arthur J. Jefferson or Gough on the 1871 Census,
His mother was Harriot Jefferson, but sometimes went under the name of Gough.
Arthur  was born c 1863 so would be about 8 years old in 1871.   On the 1861 Census the family were living at Soho Hill, Handsworth, On the 1881 Harriot was a boader at 51 Churchill St, Chorlton On Medlock. But cannot find where the family lived in 1871, any help would be greatly recieved. Thankyou
If anyone is researching the Stan Laurel's   [ the tall, thin "bumb" half of the team Laurel and Harvey] family history  I would love to hear from them.  Stan Laurel Fan  ::)

I believe there was a story going round that Stan was the father of Clint Eastwood. That seems to be nonsense as elsewhere I have read he was the son of a steelworker.
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

After A. J. Jefferson's first wife died he remarried, Mrs Venetia Matilda ROBINSON My GGrandmother, there is little history we have on Arthur Jefferson, just a couple of Photos of the family. We have the dates of the marriage and place of marriage, 1912 at St. George’s Hanover Square, London.

Thanks

Hello Nicolass. I was very interested to learn that you are the ggrandaughter of Venetia, as I have been trying to trace her roots for a long time, during my research on Arthur Jefferson's early life. I think we may well be able to help each other, as I have photos and images which you probably don't know about. Just to show I'm on the level, wasn't Venetia's son a pilot, who was killed at a very young age? As I have only just registered, I have not had time to find out I can contact you in person.
B.S. I don't why people call Laurel's dad Arthur J. Jefferson. He didn't have a middle name. The 'J' stands for Jefferson, so in effect someone is trying to brand him as Arthur Jefferson Jefferson. DOH!

Hi
You will find a little more information on, "The Laurel & Hardy Forum", various postings, search for Venetia Robinson and a couple of links to other websites, which will help you.
As for my connection to Venetia Matilda Jefferson, I am one of her G*Grandsons, from her first marriage to Major James Escourt ROBINSON, Venetia or Ven as most people called her, had Three children, 2 son's(Twins) and a daughter, my grandmother.
Venetia Matilda Robinson (nee' Parrey)was born on the  14 Oct 1872, Hatchseal, Hants.   died on 23rd January 1941..
As for the Twins, one was kill in a flying accident with another aircraft so I believe, the other Twin died of Malaria, in a Communist guerrilla camp, in Malaya, 15 Sept 1943, he had been fighting with a unit setup called Force 136 (SOE), to fight the Japanese behind their lines.
He is mentioned briefly in a book "The jungle is Neutral", which describes in great detail the daily life fighting the enemy in jungle warfare, and has been used later by more modern army's for training, if I am correct.
There was another book written by another member of the group my Great Uncle was attached to, but at the moment cannot remember the title.
Hopefully this will give some guidance in tracing her family, if it helps I have added the links to websites which might help as mentioned previously.
