I am currently researching the Tunstall family in Oldcott/Goldenhill and have several Latin/Greek/unusual family names - Spencer William Norton Tunstall, Valentine Gilbert Norton Tunstall, Benedicta, Henrietta, Oriana, Octavia, Percival, Herbert, Frederick, William, Georgiana, Felicia, Septimus and others.  Any connections?
Most Tunstall family from Burslem seem to have occupation of crate packers.

Have done some research of Wards History of Stoke on Trent.  Our Thomas Tunstall Esquire, his sons William and James Tunstall are mentioned in Victoria County History of Staffordshire.

Just browsing and noticed your message. I'm not really into Family History - but if it's of any use:
My maternal grandfather was Edwin Tunstall, born at Burslem 27.01.1879.
His parents were Elias Tunstall and Mary Hood.
His wife, my grandmother, was Catherine Peffers of Salford.
Regards,
Bob Lewis.

Spencer William Norton Tunstall

I am interetsed in finding out about an ancestor called Spencer William Norton Tunstall who was the 1851 census enumerator for Oldcott/Goldenhill in Staffs.
Spencer's writing tallies with a marriage certificate that I have.
In 1851 he was a colliery agent so he may have know the famous Robert heath, maybe there were colliery agent meetings of some sort?
Spencer's first son was called Valentine Gilbert Norton Tunstall a blacksmith by 1901 census.  I dont need to know any census ifo as I have all that but want to know where they are both buried as I cant find their graves yet.  If anyone knows where they rest I would be greatfully obliged.
I also want to know more about why the names Valentine, Norton and Gilbert were used.  Maybe some colliery connections with local pits?

Benedicta Tunstall, part of Spencer's family may have ended up in the north wales (Bangor) area so it appears from 1881 census?  She married Eli Shenton Shawe but by 1881 it looks as if she is married to Edward Shaw unless anyone could do a look up for Benedicta Shaw elsewhere?

Are you related to her or to her brother Herbert or Percival Tunstall as I have quite a lot of Tunstall family info now in Goldenhill area.
Havent yet worked on the Chell or Burslem TUNSTALL families but I have found more on TUNSTALL's in Tunstall Stoke on Trent.

James Tunstall died by 'visitation of god' and that was after a coroners inquest!  Any comments on this??
Cheers Gareth

Hi there, Alison!  I have been researching the Tunstall lines over the past 14+ years and have put together a compilation of about 1000 pages. Although I am more concerned with the Tunstalls of Thurland (my direct line), I have stacked uo a lot on the Staffordshire Tunstalls including those in Burslem, among others. Let me know how I can help.
