Me again - just had a brainwave  :o

Wonder if she was actually born in Healing - remembering that Lincky folks drop their 'h's'.....  Healing is west of Grimsby, but not that far from Barnetby - and from the census info, it looks like her father William Manders was an ag lab/shepherd who was 'hired', considering the different places he lived during his lifetime.

 ??? ??? ??? ::) ::) ::)

Clara

BUT still doesn't explain the 1851 census birthplace  :-\

Hi Clara,

Just wondering about 'Meton' and whether it could be Melton?  The next village to Barnetby-le-Wold is Melton Ross, although I have to admit that the 1851 census image doesn't look like Melton.  ???

Jo.

Thanks Jo  ;)

Yes, it certainly might be Melton - which would make sense in terms of proximity to Barnetby.  It seems like Louisa was christened in Barnetby, though this doesn't necessarily mean she was born there.

Still can't tally this in with the 'Ealin'/'Elin', though Healing is a distinct possibility.  A bit of a mystery  ???

Clara,
Do you have a photo program on your computer? If so send the image there and play with the enhancement or contrast. Sometimes you can bring the image up better. I have found that it sometimes fills in the little spaces that are missing.

Thanks Charlene  :)

Though I think this is very much trying to match up the likely places in rural Lincs to what has been recorded on the census pages ( ie not likely to tie up, due to accents - Ealin/Ealing on 2 census returns, which might be Healing....?).

What I'm saying is that it's probably not so much about being able to read what's been written on the census, but more about how to interpret it....?!!

If you look at the 'm' in marriage it seems to be a total match for the first letter.  I think it is Melton with a letter missing.  Some of my husband's rellies were born in Barnetby/Melton Ross and throughout the censuses their birthplace changed from Barnetby, Melton Ross and New Barnetby.  New Barnetby is so small it is almost part of Melton Ross and was added to the parish in 1862.
