Help with reading this, please!
« on: Saturday 05 August 06 11:46 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to work out what/where this village is in Lincolnshire ???

Hubbie's ancestor was, I believe, born in Barnetby-le-Wold in Lincs, but on the 1851 census, I can't read what it says (3rd line down: above is 'Sutton', then 'Lincoln Blyton', below is 'Blyton' and 'Belton').

On the 1861 census it gives place of birth quite clearly as 'Ealin', Lincolnshire, though I can't figure out where this might be.

Any ideas gratefully received ;D

OOPS!

I was looking at the wrong line on the second image!  Sorry.

Hi Clara

Looking at the second image, I think the "ditto" under Lincolnshire on the first image is an error.  I would say that the place of birth is almost certainly Ireland.

Most probably isn't but there is a Retford not too far from Blyton and a Sleaford near Belton.

Hi Clara,
Could you give us the reference for the 1851, so we can compare handwriting?

Thanks everyone for the suggestions - Ealand might be a possibility for 'Ealin', CatOne, but it's still odd that it doesn't tie in with the Barnetby birthplace...  so perhaps I'm wrong with that  ???

PrueM - the 1851 ref is: HO107; Piece: 2119; Folio: 341; Page: 17 - thanks for the help  :) - the person I'm researching is Louisa Gleadle (the spelling is variable), wife of Thomas.

Incidentally, on the 1871 census, her birthplace is listed as 'Elin', Lincs - it's a poor image (RG10; Piece: 3442; Folio: 65; Page: 14).

Hi Clara,

I've had a look at the 1851 and I think the first letter in the placename is an "M".  There is a Mary on the same page, and "Misterford" on the following page that are an exact match.

Having said that, the only reasonable spelling I can come up with is "Meton", which seems not to exist!

I see on familysearch IGI theres a Louisa Manders chr 09th December 1826 Barnetby Le Wold, parents William and Mary, cant find them either!  :-\

Thanks Prue for looking  ;)  I thought it was an 'M' as well, but it just didn't seem to make sense!

Looking at the 1861 and 1871 censuses, the birthplace is still a puzzle, even though the writing is relatively clear: ie 'Ealin' and 'Elin' - obviously the enumerator is just writing down what he's been told....  but still these don't tie up with the 1851 '?Meton' or whatever  ???

And yes, CatOne, I'm assuming that Thomas Gleadle's wife was Louisa Manders (twin sister to Susannah: IGI).  Louisa would have been 14-15 in 1841, so probably was already in service or working the land, though I too can't find her in 1841 (her parents are William and Mary Manders, by the way - living in Claxby, Lincs in 1841 (think it's been transcribed as 'Maunders').

Still can't figure out this birthplace though, as it appears on the censuses - really bugging me  >:(
