i notice on her marriage certificate that it was her father George Ask who was a chimney sweep, that signed on the certificate, & not her mother, makes me think her mother was dead?

The fact that her mother did not sign the marriage certificate is not really significant. The witnesses might have been friends, other members of the family, or even one of the church wardens - anybody will do. It might be that her mother could not write - not at all unusual in those days - and didn't want to sign with a cross!
