Hi Monica And Joe,

Thanks for the help, as this is a real Brickwall.

I will try to contact the Watt Library and find out if they have poor relief applications for the period 1851 to 1861.
On the 1851 census it is showing Elizabeth as 43 but she was apparently born around Oct. 31, 1815.
Also, Where is Archibald at the time of the census?

On the 1861 census, Ann is 44 but on the 1851 census she is 23 and William is 29 as he was born in 1822.  William is in a poorhouse on the 1861 census and the 3 boys are in a ragged school at the same time.
It's William's poor relief application I really need to get all the relevant info on him, Ann and the 3 boys.

I have a copy of the 1851 census for William and Mary and the 2 boys thanks to the Paisley Town Council.

Since Elizabeth doesn't appear on the 1861 census of Greenock , I wonder if she had moved away or emigrated to possibly Canada possibly giving the reason young William moves to Canada Then again, where is Archibald?

Also, where is William and Mary's daughter Mary who was bapt. July 13, 1818 ?

It looks like William Sr. has died by 1851 if Mary is now the head of the family. I haven't been able to find Mary on the 1861 census either so she may have died as well by now. Therefore it is possible they may be buried in a Greenock cemetery. This could be another search in the making.

Isn't genealogy fun?

Jim

Jim the Watt library has all the BMD  taken from the newspaper  -  they  have all been indexed from 1843 onwards -  if your family's births or burials appeared in the newspaper it would have been indexed

Now that is great to know.  I wonder if they do lookups for the BMD's of William's boys and Ann.

Thanks again,

Jim

Hi Jim
click on the relevant name link and it will take you to the BMD's as they appeared in the Greenock Telegraph
hope it helps, although there are quite a few McGills on there, not all families had the money to put BMD's in the paper,
Elaine

Thanks Elaine,
This is a great site for info. Nothing shows on my William or Mary though. I'm keeping this site in my favourites for future reference.

Hi Elaine .... Remember me ... I had an account here under the name Pearlfisher , but could not remember how to access it , changed email and all that .... Still can't work out how to make a post ... ha ha ha

I asked some time ago about finding out anything about my grandfather Joseph McCormick ... Since then I have some more information .... His father I think I said before was Daniel McCormick married to Catherine ward in Dumbarton in the catholic chapel in 1897 .... They had 7 children
DANIEL BORN 1897/8
JAMES BORN 1899/1900
DAVID BORN 1905/6
JOSEPH BORN 28TH JUNE 1906 IN SCOTSTOWN RENFREW
SAHRA BORN 1908/9
AND
TWINS
JOHN AND THOMAS BORN 1910/11
Not very good at all this stuff still ... but would love to find out if my father has any living relatives still and whatever happened to his estranged father that he only saw once in 1954 when he said he was a proffesional  golf caddy ....Any help would be great ... Thank you Steve
