Gt Dunmow Marriage - POULTER/SMITH
« on: Wednesday 02 August 06 13:47 BST (UK) »
I have a marriage in Gt Dunmow 21/7/1713 between Samuel Poulter and Mary Smith it was by license.

What I am trying to find out is if Samuel was a widower or a single man?

Does anyone know if this sort of information was put in the register at this time 1713?

Thank you
Mortieau

Hi Bryant & Clincher,
Thanks, I would apreciate it if you could look it up. It's one of those father & son situations where they are both named Samuel Poulter, the mother dies in 1711 then I have the Samuel marriage I mentioned in 1713 Gt Dunmow which I hope is the father's remarriage .

(If that's the case then I have another Samuel Poulter marriage also in 1713 January 27th,  3 miles to the west in Little Canfield to Elizabeth Mead, which I am then  guessing is the son.)

looking forward to hearing from you
Many Thanks
Mortieau

Essex RO ref: D/AML 1713 (this is a reference to a batch of about 150 licences amongst which your one was, thankfully, easy to pick out).
Unfortunately, no mention is made of Samuel Porter's marital status - it just refers to him as being of 'Great Dunmow, Cowper*'. Apart from that, the name of the prospective bride was originally written as 'Mary Risdale' but then amended to 'Mary Smith'. Perhaps that alteration has something to do with the fact that her marital status is shown as 'spinster, a widow'. She was also of Great Dunmow.

Whoever said genealogy was straightforward? ::)

* I believe a cowper is an old-fashioned way of spelling cooper (a maker of barrels)

Hi Mortieau,
I am on the trail of the same family as you - I am descended from the Elizabeth Poulter who married John Skingle that you mention in another post.
I am happy to compare notes with you.  I have collected lots of Poulters (and various other spellings).  I am not sure I know where this Samuel came from though :(
