Hi Cris

I was very interested to see your posting about Rachel APPLEBY, daughter of John and Mary and wife of George MARSHALL.

I am tracing the victims of the Sheffield Flood [12th March 1864] and one of the victims was Mary APPLEBY nee MARSHALL who was the wife of Cowton APPLEBY. Her son John Cowton APPLEBY and her Grand Daighter Mary APPLEBY also drowned.

Cowton too was born to John and Mary although the jury is still out as to whether it was Mary Cowton or Mary Harrison - long story here!!

I would be interested in making contact with you to see if you have traced Rachel's parents and I will happily pass on details that I have about the family.

Hope to hear from you

Hi Clive - loads of Tindalls in Scarborough, I think there is even a book about them  - hoping to get to visit one day. They were Quakers and I'd love to find more infoon the family.

Karen - I will get back to you on the Appleby's - I seem to have mislaid my file on them!

I have read a copy of the book in private hands.  It takes the Tindalls in Scarborough back to the 1400s, which would explain why the name is common by the late 1700s.  The reason for the book is that they were very important as a ship building family in Scarborough.

I made a note of the dates and names but not the details of the story, if you are interested?

Penndennis that would be fantastic - I'd love a copy of the book but don't suppose you know if that is possible?

I've spent the last hour and a half trying to get the whole thing down, and posted it, but for some reason it hasn't turned up yet.  If it 's not here by lunchtime I'll try again.

I'll try again, because there are a few people following the discussion who may want the info.  If that fails I'll ask for your e-mail and send it straight to you.

Thanks

Bill

Attempt the third.

My connection with the Tindalls is Isabella who married Edward Harris.  I did not make notes from the book for the Tindalls after that date.  I don't know at what point you will be able to establish a link.  I might be able to recontact the original source, if you can't make a connection.

The book is a substantial and elderly hardback so copying isn't possible.  I suppose theoretically a reprint could be done, but it would be expensive.

If I only show a year then this should be read as approximate.  I have not given all the details of spouse ancestors.  I’ll start from Isabella and work backwards

Isabella Tindall (9 Aug 1791 - 20 Jul 1868) married (on 12 Oct 1814) Edward Harris (1787-1852)

-------------------------------------- The book -----------------------------------
Her father
John Tindall (27 Feb 1755 - 1809) married Isabella MacIver (1755 - 1836)

His father
John Tindall (28 Oct 1722 – 1773) married (in 1745) Jane Dowker (1725 – 1802)

His father
James Tindall (28 Feb 1688 – 1767) married Ann Hall (1690 - ?)

His father
John Tindall (1645 – 1698) married ? Cockerill (1660 - ?)

His father
John Tindall (1604 – 1675) married Mary Blackwell.  This man is recorded as from North Grimston (my comment, probably the one who started up in Scarborough).

His father
John Tindall (1580 – 1640) married Margaret Simpson (1580 - ?).  He is also  North Grimston

His father
Ralph Tindall (1550 – 1605) married ? Foster (1560 - ?).  He is recorded as Yorkshire.

His father
Thomas Tyndall (note change in spelling) (1537 – bef 1574) married Joan(?) Harrington.  He is from Danby Wiske.  (My comment, either his birth or that of his son above or both must be the wrong date)

His father
James Tyndale (1510 – 1557) married Alice Culdwell (1521 - ?).  He is recorded simply as North East England.

His father
John Tyndale (1480 - ?)  married Emote Thornton (1490 – 1554)
