Sisland records "how to verify"
« on: Sunday 30 July 06 18:27 BST (UK) »
How to verify these records from the Sisland Church Registers?

I have a marriage certificate that shows Levi Owens born 1819 married Hannah Rich in Langley 1845. Hannah’s Father John Rich is a witness for the bride, there is no witness for the groom.

Levi Owens appears to have taken his Mother’s name rather than his Fathers. The Sisland records state that Levi was born the son of Robert Able and Hannah Owens May 9th 1819. Robert and Hannah married in 1823.

It seems unusual for Levi to have taken his Mother’s name rather than his Father’s name, or is it? Is there anyway to verify these records?

Hi Roddy

As Levi was born before his parents' marriage, he could only take her surname.

The later marriage did not legitimise him under English law.

Have you found the family in 1841?

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hi Arranroots

No, To finding the family in 1841.

I am also not certain how to trace backwards from 1819 or 1823. Another entry in Sisland records refers to a Mary Burgess who is married a Michael Owen(s). The record shows they had four children, one was a Hannah born 1794, but that seems a date too early for the Levi Hannah marriage.

Thanks

I found some candidates in 1841: Levi ABLE is living away from the family, but Robert and Hannah have a lot of other children.

HO107/779/13/4/2

Levi ABLE 20 M.S. Yes

living in the household of farmer Edward WHARTER (?), Abbey Farm, Langley

HO107/779/13/9/3

Robert ABLE 45 ag lab Yes
Hannah 45 Yes
John 15 Yes
James 14 Yes
Emily 13 Yes
Mary 12 Yes
William 10 Yes
Susan 8 Yes
Charlotte 6 Yes
Hannah 4 Yes
Sarah 2 Yes

Address: Langley, Norfolk

Remembering that ages were rounded down, I don't know whether this helps with confirming Hannah's age?

Often confirming facts is a question of amassing information - perhaps on later censuses a relative will come to stay?  Maybe there is a will which mentions the family's offspring?  You should also try to eliminate other possibilities, which is trickier once you get back past the censuses.  Don't forget death certificates - the informant might give a vital clue.

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Thank you for the Able family news.

The dates seem to fit for both Levi & Hannah so this has left me wondering are Levi & Hannah Owens and Levi & Hannah Able the same people?

Levi, Levy Owen(s) & Hannah appear on the 1851-61 & 81 census for Claxton. Could you please check for me if this family appear on the 1841 Claxton census.

Could you also please explain what the  reference HO  represents and the source.

Thank you

Roddy :-\

Hi Yokel and Arranroots

Yokel I clicked through to the link you gave me and I now understand the HO reference. As Arranroots and you pointed out Levi is shown in Langley, but which Levi?

Levi son of Robert Able and Hannah Owens was born April 3rd 1819, Baptised May 9th 1819. This info appears in the Sisland Register.

I am wondering what Levi's surname was at birth was it Able or Owens? Owens is the name he registered himself as when he married Hannah Rich.

This is all too intriguing so I have decided to go ahead and send of for a birth certificate based on the above info. I will post the result when the certificate arrives

Thank both for taking me to this point.

Roddy

Ok! Don't tell me...I'm a dummy :-[.

No I won't be sending for a certificate. I got carried away about the possible solution and completely forgot about the date.

I am not sure I follow!

If you mean that Levi's age is a couple of years out, don't forget it would have been rounded down in 1841 to 20.
