which William
« on: Sunday 30 July 06 16:21 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find the parents for William Mitchell and have a couple of possibilities. I know his father is called John (from his marriage cert)

William gives his birth place as Sheffield on the 1881 census (aged 64) and is on the 1841 census living in Brodcar (Hoyland) in 1841

the births I've found on the IGI are :-

1.  christened 05/01/1817 at Attercliffe Chapel Sheffield, parents John and Grace. There is a John and Grace on the previous page of the 1841 census so these are a strong possibility.

2. christened 05/10/1816 at Penistone parents John and Charlotte

3. christened 17/06/1817 Penistone parents John and Livinia. He has a middle name of Spooner.

If anyone can see any of  the parents on 1851 or 61 census there may be some info which will help decide which are the right parents.

I know this is a long shot but hope something will help me

Regards

Hello Shelagh.
I am about 4 years behind you on this one!
William and Elizabeth Mitchell were my great great grandparents. I too have their marriage certificate and the name John as William's father. I had also found John and Grace on the previous page to William in the 1841 census but I am reluctant to jump to conclusions without another bit of evidence to link them. I am fairly new to family history research and just feeling my way.
I am using Ancestry as my main resarch tool and through there I have found an American researcher who does list John and Grace as the parents and also has a list of all their other children.
I'd be grateful to know whether you were able to solve this one if you are happy to tell me. I'd also be happy to share my tree on Ancestry if it is of any relevance to you. Thanks in anticipation. Frank

Thanks, yes I did get it. I have been trying to puzzle out why I can't send a PM in reply - have finally read the bit in Help which says I can't send PM's till I have made 3 postings. This is only my second so I'll think of another and get it on the system after which I can reply more fully.
I am certainly interested in any gen on the Mitchell line please. I come down a slightly different line - from William and Elizabeth via John (1853 - 1921) rather than older brother Joseph. I'll happily give more information as soon as I can do it via a PM.
I have John (and Sarah)'s family bible which is not complete but has has useful information. I also have a drawing given to me by my Dad's cousin which is said to be of Joseph. I'll let you have a copy in due course via a PM!
