Which Charles Golding is the right one?
« on: Saturday 30 October 04 16:50 BST (UK) »
Hi can anyone help, I am trying to establish the parents of a Charles Golding who is my Great great grandfather.  Charles was born in Goudhurst about 1825 according to census for 1881, 1891 although he is listed as James on 1871.  I know that he married Sarah Goldsmith on 31 July 1847 at Etchingham, Sussex but I'm not sure how to confirm his parents.  Goudhurst Baptism records show that two illegitimate sons of Ann Golding were baptised  on 9th October 1825 with two different fathers, the father listed for Charles was Thomas Brissenden.  On 23rd February 1825 there was a Charles Golden son of John and Harriett.  I am fairly new to genealogy so not sure what I do next ???

Does the 1847 marriage at Etchingham not hold any clues?  Does it not say the father's name - if the column is blank then it is quite likely that he was illegitimate.  Maybe the names of the witnesses might help.

If this fails to confirm his parentage then try tracing both of the Charles GOLDINGs  forwards through the census/parish registers etc. to see if you can eliminate one of them that way - maybe one died or married somebody else - checking for BRISSENDEN also in case that name was favoured later on.

It would probably be a good idea to follow the families of both Charles GOLDINGs for the time being - checking for marriages etc. of siblings (to see who the witnesses were).

Maybe they will even turn out to be related?

Hope this helps a bit.

Hi Casalguidi, thanks for your help.  The marriage details I got from the IGI listings online so I couldn't check witnesses etc, but will try what you have suggested and see if I can check out both possibilities.
Thanks again,
Julie

Thanks Tony, you are a star, my great grandfather was Charles' son Harry born about 1874, he also was married twice, first to a Florence from Horsmonden, then later to my great gran Annie Elizabeth Baldock in 1908.  I will look at the copies of Goudhurst baptisms to see if I can find anything about John Golding.  I don't know if its of any use to you but I have a little info about the Goldsmiths, some of their childrens names etc.  If I can find anything of interest I will gladly pass it on to you.  Its really nice to find someone else looking at the same tree, will get back to you after checking, Julie :)

Hi !!

Sadly I cannot answer your question, but I have an Edith Goldsmith who married a Daniel Golding in Goudhurst in 1869.  Are they any connection to your family?
