Hi Clair, yes, I had seen it, thanks for reminding me, I'd meant to have a look at that family also, they may have some connection to mine ...

Monica, you are right, hadn't noticed that before but now when I check my dates, I have only the year for Elizabeth (1857), Robert (1859) and William (1862).

The 1861 (Baillieston) shows the children from Joseph Hewitt's previous marriage (his first wife died), then James aged 6, Elizabeth aged 4 and Robert aged 2 - all 3 born in Ballieston.  There were another 4 children born after that, all in Baillieston.

I’m putting forward this idea because we’d had a similar, equally frustrating situation.

We’d been searching for my Grandad’s bc and 3 years and a lot of money later, we finally found it – under his mother’s maiden name -with his birth certificate marked “illegitimate”.

I wonder if maybe the person who reported Elizabeth's death gave incorrect information?

Straws firmly clutched, I searched for her death between 1902 and 1942.  There’s an Elizabeth Gibson, other surname of WRIGHT, who died in 1932, in Springburn, aged 72, so born 1860.  (I’m sure you know that the age given on death certificates is not always accurate.)

Springburn is right next door to Bishopbriggs (where Jelly Hill Farm was) and was/is Stobhill Hospital at that time.

So – depending on how desperate you are to find Elizabeth - I’d have a peek at the 1932 dc....

Hope this helps - rather than confuse matters!!  Let me know how you get on…..

Good luck.

Thanks Kate, it was a good thought but that Elizabeth is an Elizabeth Gibson married to a Daniel Wright.  I am beginning to think that I might have to track down Andrew Gibson's grave and see if there are any clues there.

from a NZ source:
On March 17 1913, Duncan and Elizabeth Jackson(Gibson) landed in new Zealand from Glasgow together with younger sister Isabella and settled in Otago. In about 1924, William Gibson and his wife Annie, daughter Betty set out for New Zealand together with the mother, Mrs Elizabeth Gibson who would be about 70 years at the time.  Bill settled in the Omaru are where most of his family still live. Granny Gibson died 7 June 1938 aged 84 years.

Hello Kath, thank you for this information, I did find Elizabeth a while back - it is so long since I posted this I had forgotten about it - and knew about William and his wife going to Oamaru with her but not about the girls going earlier. You will not believe it but having torn my hair out over Elizabeth for years, my mother (she was my father's great grandmother) said to me a couple of years ago 'oh you should have asked me, I knew she was in NZ'  ::)

Are you related to the family? I knew them when I was small many years ago and have often thought I really should take a trip down to Oamaru (I am in Wellington) and look them up again.

regards,

Lindsay
