smith tristram marriage
« on: Saturday 30 October 04 07:00 BST (UK) »
searching for a marriage between miss tristram and mr smith, other family names involved could be "Barron", christian names Charles Henry Samual Smith. A shot in the dark but that is all the info I have, other that their son Charles Henry Samual Smith was born in Madras India, and became an army bandsman. Thanks in anticipation.

Agnew - welcome to Rootshat. Before anyone can help you [and is it hard to track the surname Smith] we would need to know what period and what country we are looking at apart from where their son was born -and, by the way, when was that?
Time, Place - are all important in family history research.
Have you looked at the Beginners Board - stacks of useful informatiuon there.
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

thank you, I am assuming smith/tristram marriage took place in UK, possibly Sth Staff, their son was born in Madras in 1885 and had an older brother Hedley or Hadley, so maybe the marriage was in India in early 1800's.

Hello Agnew,

I do not like using sites that try to sell things to you but sometimes there is no other way around the situation. I suppose I could have suggested you visit your local library and look at books giving the origin of surnames but with the origin of the name Tristram sitting before me on the net I am going this road. Whilst the name Smith is very common Tristram is a rarer name. On the subject of names those of the son Hedley or Hadley look very much like a family surname. At this stage it is hard to tell if it comes from the Smith side or the Tristram side of the family. Family history sometimes invloves more than a straight search and a look for a Hedley / Hadley connected to Smith or Tristram may be beneficial.

http://www.familysearch.org You can do a search here using the surname only. I checked this to see if it was possible using the Tristram surname. I have not yet checked dates but let us assume her marriage was 1880 then a birth date between 1850 - 1860 would be a reasonable assumption.

I spotted a Tristram girl born in India in 1885. I wonder if that might be a daughter of Miss Tristram's brother.

The combination of christian names that your ancestors use may assist you in your search. You need to have another look at those dates. A son being born in 1885 would mean the marriage took place in the 1870s or early 1880s unless you meant the birth was in 1805 in which case the marriage would be in the early 1800s.

I tend to stick to replying to people sending questions to the Irish boards but you were kind enough to respond to my answer regarding Kirkpatrick of Coleraine so I decided to see if you needed assistance elsewhere.

Best Wishes, Christopher
