Hi AK

Have you got his baptism record? I'm asking because my local library has microfiche for Stroud parish records and I could look him up for you when I'm next in there if that would help.

And most especially the origins of William Cannings,  a Baptist, born abt 1791 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire

Hello Angela,

No, do not have this. The details from the IGI show he was born 1781 in Rodborough. Believe he is the son of William Halliday, also from Rodborough.

Any help you can give would be appreciated.

Best wishes,

AK

Hello AK

I've had a look at the IGI and it looks like the entry for Zadock is a proper transcription of the original records, so is likely to be very reliable.

I can't remember how much detail appears on the early Rodborough records - Stroud baptisms have pretty much a family hisory of both parents with each baptism entry  ;D but I'm not sure that Rodborough ones have much more than the parents' names. Worth a look though! I'll check in my library when I'm next there to see if I can find him, unless someone spots this and is going to the main Record Office in Gloucester first  ;D

Best wishes

Hello again AK

I've just been to the library and found your Zadock's baptism. Unfortunately, there's really no more details than you already have  :(

I think the date is Feb 4th (bit faint!) 1781 and the entry reads Zadock son of William Halliday and Elizabeth his wife. Looks like (from the IGI) that that could well be Elizabeth Herbert, who married William Halliday 25 Dec 1770. If you like, I can check that with the registers when I next go to the library and also any other siblings for Zadock.

Best wishes

Angela

Hi AK
I have a Halliday in my tree from Gloucester. Her name was Eliza Halliday and she married Alfred Frederick Smart in Stroud July-Sept 1878 and Eliza was born c1855. Does this ring any bells?
Gloucestershire: Smart, Halliday, Gardiner, Crook(e), Driver, Duck, Edgerly, Hunt, Lewis, Plank, Wear, Wier, Wire, Wynn

Wiltshire: Medlam, Chandler, Collis
