Hi there,

Unfortunately, you won't be able to look for his death certificate online as there is a 100-year disclosure rule for online certifcates.  Your will either have to order his certificate from the GRO (see this link - http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/famrec/index.html - but I am not sure that you will have enough info for that  :( ) or hope that some kind soul will go and do a look up for you in New Register House where all certificates can be viewed.

Cheers,
Clare

Have you found his Death Certificate and Marriage Certificate in order to see if his parents might have been named on them?  Do you know if he emigrated as a child or as an adult?  Where does the clue that his father might have been John come from?  Did he have any siblings and if so what were their names?

Any of these clues might point a direction towards finding his parents.  A search of marriages in Ayr, Ayrshire alone for a time period leading up to 1919 of a John Hunter to anyone returns 9 possible couples. :(  If you could find a hint as to what your grandfather's mother's name might have been or his father's occupation then we might just be able to zoom in on the parents.  No promises though.  Like Clare as already pointed out you might be better off asking GROS to search for the birth for you in 1919.....but then if there happened to be more than one David born that year you're still out of luck! :(

Best wishes
Jean

I just got my mom to check my sister's baby book for some info, hers has a small family tree in it. I was mistaken on the name. David Hunter born 1919 Ayr Scotland, his father is also David Hunter, I don't have a birth or death date on him or even a location for either, so unfortunately I still don't know if David, my grandfather, came here as a baby, boy or older. I don't think he was all that old because he married my grandmother around 20 years of age. Anyway his father the next David hunter on my list was from Scotland and married a woman named Elizabeth. I know nothing so far of siblings since I never knew the man.

Ok...so now you're thinking that David and Elizabeth were the parents to your David Hunter who married in Ontario.  If this is true and they were married in Ayrshire (lots of assumptions here!) then you might be in luck as there is only one such couple marrying in the parish of Stevenston in 1915.  From this MC we learn that the David who married Elizabeth had a father named John (which I assume we can take as a postive sign)....however the groom's occupation at time of marriage was Driver, Field Artillery.  So this David was serving in WW1 then.  Is there any family history that might lead you to think that??  And if your estimated birth date of David as 1919 is correct then this man (if he is the right one!) had to have survived the war to father the child.  I still think you need to do some work on the Canada end.  Try and get a death certificate and/or a marriage certificate and see if it names parents or their occupation.

Best wishes
Jean

nope, David(2) and Elizabeth were born and married in Scotland and their son David(1), my grandfather was born in Ayr Scotland 1919.
David(1) Hunter was born in Scotland, I don't know when he came to Ontario but he was here by his late teens, he served in WW2 stationed in Africa, north south I don't know. I have the discharge paper at my mom's place so I may be able to scan that sometime. He married Ann Patricia Campbell in 1939 I think then they had 3 sons born 1940, 1946 and 1952, all 3 deceased now in opposite order 1997, 1998, 1999. David(1) Hunter died 1979 in mid to late July. I know that he was burried July 24 1979 as it was my father's brithday and only a few months after he married my mother.
If I have missed anything else or something is unclear, I will try to straighten that out, but right now I am off to meet my mother. I am going as support for an appointment, she had a mamagram a couple weeks ago and they found something small, she already has pre-cancerous skin spots so I am really hoping that this is going to turn out to be nothing, or at least nothing serious. Cancer runs rampant in her family already claiming one of her sister way too young. It is on my father's side as well. 2 of the 3 brothers I spoke of died of stomach cancer, my father was massive heart attack. My husband's grandmother is dying right now of cancer that lead to a stroke over a year ago. I fear for what my own family now has to look forward to with it being on both sides of my family and at least one of my hubby's.

Anyway if no one can find anything yet after this, maybe this line is just not meant to be traced right now.

Hi, hunterbloom...I think you might want to read Jean's entry once again...
as i think you misunderstood it... according to your informatiuoin her lookup
sounds feasible...Later you might even want to see if the original David signed
up for ww1 in Canada....as many Scotsmen came here looking for work just
prior to the war and then married back overseas...
