Hi Kate,

Welcome!  :)  I would be interested in knowing which of the Nightingales you descend from.  They are quite an interesting family.

Hi there, this is how my line goes - it starts in Essex:

John Nightingale had son William Nightingale who died in 1571.
William married Gonar Thurgood.
They had Geoffrey (1550) who married Catherine Clamps (I have a picture of them).
Geoffrey and Catherine had Sir Thomas - 1st Baronet - High Sherriff of Essex.
His first wife was Millicent Clerke (I have a direct line of her family traced back to 980 - fascinating) and they had Thomas in Bassingbourn in 1609.
Thomas married Jane Ventris and they had Robert in Whittlesford in 1639.
Robert married Constantia Newlin and they had Granado in Hauxton (he eventually owned plantations in Barbados).
Granado married Ann Paine and they had Joseph in Toft.
Joseph married Hannah Ivett and they had John in 1755.
John married Elizabeth Thurlborn and they had John in 1797.
He married Sarah Asplen and they had John 1824 who married Eliza Hickman.
They had James George who married Mary Ann Thorp.
They had Harry.
Harry didn't marry Alice Maud Ranscombe (she was previously married) and they had my precious Nan who is 96 years old - Cynthia Leah May Nightingale.

In amongst that lot are hundreds more children, branches off, marriage dates, death dates, birth dates - loads but obviously I have just summarised my direct line. Also, it is important to point out that my later ancestors seem to have been the poorer ones so probably 3rd or 4th children of an esteemed couple - you know, 1st inherits, second in army, third to church...... that's how it used to be.

Would love to know more about your line too.

Kate

Hi all,

I can't believe it....I've actually found someone else related to the Nightingale Baronetcy....and this after trawling the net for about 8 years....!

If I get 10 minutes, I'll post my line.....

I really must update my family tree I was working on (until about 3 years ago, when my business took over my priorities !).

regards

Tim O'Malley
Grandmother: Lilian Bertha PRESSLAND, dau. of Louisa Maitland ADDISON and her 2nd husband, Herbert Caleb PRESSLAND.

L.M ADDISON was the 1st wife of Edward Henry NIGHTINGALE, by whom she had a son Edward Manners NIGHTINGALE (who subsequently inherited the Baronetcy making him the 14th Baron and to whom "my" grand-mother was his younger half-sister). This means I'm not in the direct bloodline of the NIGHTINGALES, but it's an interest all the same... :)

E.H. Nightingale (who died young, age 39, in 1895, after 8 yrs of marriage) was the son of Henry Dickonson NIGHTINGALE, who was the son of Charles NIGHTINGALE, who was son of Charles Ethelston NIGHTINGALE, which is where I link to the OP.

BTW: Most of the info I have on the NIGHTINGALE's, I got from their entry in Who's Who....but there are some distinct differences between some of the info posted on this thread and the Who's Who entries...I'll have to refer back to it and see if the commanality of first names used by the family might have caused errors to crop up.

Edit: There's a useful NIGHTINGALE family tree here:
http://www.william1.co.uk/w148.htm

and the lineage of the Baronetcy is here (some way down the page!!):
http://www.angeltowns.com/town/peerage/baronetsn.htm

and there's a nice "report" about Newport Pond, Essex from whence the Nightingale family started (see the very end of the page !):
http://www.historyhouse.co.uk/essexn05a.html
Paternal Side: O'Malley - O'Brien (Ire/Eng/Aus/USA) - Pressland / Presland - Nightingale (in UK)
Maternal Side: Osman - Charters / Charteris - Whittle - Cox (all in UK)

Hello everyone.

I realise I'm 9 years too late to reply to this thread, however, I couldn't resist not connecting with other Nightingales from around the world in regards to the Nightingale Baronetcy. To introduce myself, I'm Edward (Nightingale) and I have a direct lineage to Sir Thomas Nightingale (1st Baronet) and currently in line to be the 20th Baronet. I am also based in the UK, though quite away from Knessworth Hall. When I get a chance I will post my lineage as it is very rich but as the family dates back to the 14th century it may take a while. I am in the mean time putting together a family tree on PDF form so if anyone is interested in having a copy please let me know and I will e-mail it to you.

I hope to hear from some of you soon.

Edward

Also found this thread recently. The Nightingale line in my family goes back to the 1600's, with roots in both Australia, England and New Zealand.
