Hi all

Thankyou for your replies, will follow up the Hallamshire cutlers.

Dalum - I have the newpaper report and trial records and genral pardon.  He was tried at the Derby Assizes, did spend some time in gaol as the incident happened in Early June but was not tried until 15th July.  I don't know if there is anyway to find out who visited him there.

rjknott - I have extensively search all Australian records and have his death & marriage certificate, there is no mention of parents names.  The ancestry board you have linked is known to me, and I have no knowledge of a Francis & Maria.  Maria was Stephen's wife, I don't know where that information has come from, I am in contact with all relatives researching the surname and we have all come to the same brickwall.

Regards

Hello

I am researching this name  (De Busk) for my neighbour whose ancestry includes the De Busk family from Sheffield.

I found a Stephen De Busk in the criminal records on Ancestry who also went by the alias of Copley, he was convicted once for larceny in 1823 and sentenced to death for house breaking in 1826 under the name of Busque and as you say tried at the Derby Assizes but I found some info through googling the name Stephen Copley that suggests he was transported to Tasmania on the ship Andromeda which arrived at Van Diemans land on 23 Feb 1827. This information states :Stephen Le Busque alias  Copley. Derbyscourts.com/index/data/1826html

If this is one and the same person which I am pretty sure is the case  according to the evidence found..he was born in Sheffield in 1803 to John Debusk and Mary France who married in Rotherham Yorks in 1794.

John Debusk was baptised in Saint Martin in the Fields Westminster London 2 July 1771 and his parents were John De Busk and Sophia. This is as far as I have got. My neighbour descends from Stephens brother Thomas De Busk and she is very interested to know what happened to Stephen!  So if you think all this relates to your ancester we would be interested to know what happened to him after that when he presumably called himself Lebusque.

Best wishes

If it is helpful, remember that the earlier records consist of a written record of what the vicar, court usher, census enumerator heard or what they thought they heard. I would consider a LeBusque and a DeBusk to be sufficiently close to be the same person. It would of course be better to get written confirmation, but in that era unlikely.

Hi,

I just found your question when looking for information on the children of Ellen De Busk and James Wade. I had  decided that Stephen De Busk and Stephen De Busque were one and the same. My Great Grandmother was Mary Louisa De Busk.  I haven't been able to find birth records for several of Thomas de Busk and Mary Ann Tagg's children and some of the records I have found also have the De Busque alternative. I believe Stephen De Busque, died in Victoria, Australia. He had quite a few children after marrying an Irish girl.

If you have any more information I'd be happy to swap notes or my tree on Ancestry is Hodgson/Sykes

Kind regards

Sue
