Hi Shelagh,
I was idly looking for Francis Cooper's birth (not successfully) when I found your posts.
He was a farmer in Ripley and married Jane Skaife in Ripon in 1816. That's all I know about him. Jane was baptised in 1794 to Robert and Mary at Hampsthwaite near Harrogate. There is a reasonably well-authenticated line of Skaifes in the area going back as far as 1691 (all in the IGI).
My interest is in Thomas Cooper - I still don't know when he died - and his  daughters Ann Eliza and Hannah Skaife. The former married my G Grandfather and lived in Glasgow. Her sister took her place when she died.
Hope this is useful if you don't already know it.
Stephen

Hi Stephen,

sorry I didn't spot your reply earlier.

I  am descended from Thomas Cooper and Ann Tomlinson via their daughter Mary Ellen Cooper.

She  moved to glasgow after her first husband died (1883) and  I always wondered why. but  presumably  she moved there because her only family was her sisters and they were there.

Since my original post here I have quite a bit about Thomas and also the Skaife's which I will dig out for you and send in a few days

I'll be in touch

And the move to Glasgow also coincided with her sister's death!
My mother, who lived in Pollokshields, remembers her (she was known as Polly) living in Shawlands so the two sisters must have exchanged visits.
What I have on the Skaifes/Coopers is at http://windhillorigins.co.uk/familyhistory_files/skaife/index.htm.
Funnily enough, I visited Hampsthwaite at the weekend to see what it is like.
Will look forward to an exchange of info.
Stephen
