 Hi Mick,
         Thanks for this,my grandfather was listed as gasworker in 1870 on his marriage certificate,later he was a gas manager for the Wyastone leys Estate in Wales,I have been told vaguely that each estate had their own gas supply,then in 1910 he worked as a gasman in some relation to The Thames in Berkshire,could anyone enlighten me as to what this could possibly be.

I know that some water treatment plants use the given off methane as a fuel.

Worcester being one!

So presumably they would need a gas technician to manage or look after this.

Errrr! I forgot to mention my father worked for British Gas (West Midlands) based in Hereford as An Emergency Repair Gang until the formation of Transco, when shortly after he retired.

Thanks for this. My grandfather was a lamplighter for Manchester Gas for many years. I hope they can help me with his employment record for instance, I've had no luck anywhere, so far!

Just noticed this forum today.  Has anyone tried obtaining information from National Grid archives?
Unfortunately, apart from the Archivist and one other employee, they are dependant upon volunteers to a great extent. Inevitably, enquiries can take some considerable time. Persistance is the key. Once contact is established I have found them exelent in providing information.

I have just found your link. Trying to find a photo of Thomas Hardick, Secretary of Salisbury Gas Light & Coke Company for 40 years up to his death in 1895 - so far without success. He was a prominent figure in Warminster Baptist work - the Church celebrates its 200th year this year.

Any help or suggestions, please
