McAlpine
« on: Sunday 23 July 06 16:33 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for information on Mathew Gardner McAlpine. He was married to Euphemia Russell. One of their children was James McAlpine, born19/8/1836, and James was married to Margaret Walker in New Monkland 1856.
Thanks

Thanks Janice.

The only one not mentioned is James, born 1836 in Denny. And he's the one I've got in my tree! I'm pleased to know of his siblings though.

Hi Betty,

One thing that struck me about Matthew & Euphemias children . . .

More often that not, a couple's first child is born sooner than 4 years after their marriage - do you think there were maybe more who died in infancy?

Also, there is an awful big gap between the birth of James in 1836 and Euphemia in 1846 - more infant deaths do you think?

Hi Anne,

It does seem a bit odd. In fact, I'm quite confused.

First of all I've got  Euphemia Russell born 5/1/1814 in Denny, Stirling. Her parents were James Russell and Margaret Henderson who were married in December 1804.

Then I've got another Euphemia Russell born 12/12/1814 in Larbert Stirling. Her parents were James Russell and Catherine Hardie who were married on 9/10/1814.

James Russell and Catherine Hardie are shown with two children, the eldest bein Euphemia, followed by her brother James, born three years later in 1817.

It makes more sense to me that  James Russell and Margaret Henderson were the parents of Euphemia because of the date of their marriage. On the IGI, Euphemia is the only child shown!.

James Russell and Catherine Hardie are shown with two children, the eldest being Euphemia, followed by her brother James, born three years later in 1817.

Regarding Mathew and Euphemas' children   -------
I have found two more of their children on the IGI.
1.  Robert Russell McAlpine, DOB 1/8/1841
2.  William McAlpine,            DOB 5/11/1843
I agree with you that there may even have been more children who didn't survive.

Getting back to Euphemia Russell, I don't know which of the two couples are her parents. Perhaps someone will be able to help!.

Betty

Hi Betty,
I've been working on the McAlpines of Bothwell, Shotts, & Denny and came across your Rootschat.

I think that Matthew Gardiner McAlpine & Euphemia Russell probably succumbed to the Cholera Epidemic that was around Old Monkland & New Monkland in 1848/9.

In 1851 their sons David & James can be seen in Hamilton Rd, Bothwell with their uncle Robert McAlpine & Ann Paterson (Parents of Sir Robert McAlpine).
Also in 1851 their children William & Euphemia can be seen at Shedding Road, Denny with their Grandmother Margaret Henderson.

Regards Brian

DC of Margaret McAlpine Russell, 1857, d of James and Margaret Morton McAlpin
« Reply #7 on: Saturday 07 February 15 12:24 GMT (UK) »
I have recently found the DC of Margaret McAlpine Russell, 1857.  Her grandson Andrew Crom was the informanant, stating that her parents were James McAlpine and Margaret Morten. Her age is given as 83, so her birth year would be around 1774. She lived at Snarnothshield, which matches earlier census information.

The details of her ancestry I posted originally were, therefore, incorrect and I am looking for family details.

I see a marriage document in Carluke for what might be these parents: 12 Dec 1761 James McAlpie and Margaret Morton.  Also two children born to them Martha, b 16 Mar 1777 and William b 21 Feb 1775.

The descendants may be ...not certain, though:

Descendants of James McAlpin

   1     James McAlpin
.      +Margaret Morton
.............   2     Andrew McAlpie   b: 05 Jan 1761 in Carluke, Lanarkshire, Scotland
.............   2     James McAlpine   b: 20 Nov 1763 in Carluke, Lanarkshire, Scotland
.............   2     Robert McAlpie   b: 19 Jan 1766 in Carluke, Lanarkshire, Scotland
.............   2     Margaret McAlpine   b: Abt. 1774 in Carluke, Lanarkshire, Scotland
.................      +John Russell   b: 01 Apr 1766 in Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland
.............   2     Martha McAlpine   b: 06 Mar 1777 in Carluke, Lanarkshire, Scotland
.............   2     Mary Calpie   b: 09 Apr 1779 in Carluke, Lanarkshire, Scotland
.............   2     Janet McAlpie   b: 29 Apr 1781 in Carluke, Lanarkshire, Scotland

I'd be glad to hear from others researching the McAlpin and Morton families of Carluke or from others with clues as to the ancestry of the families.
