Anna - Ref Gardner's

Hello Anna,

Bo'ness Lower Church Wynd Cemetery, in the Pre 1855 Monumental Inscriptions, Volume 1 for West Lothian, it states the following:

No 36 (I have a plan which I can scan if you like)
fallen stone .....................................age .., wife Isabella Laing, son John died May 1836 aged 4 years, children ..................   (the missing husband may be John Matthew Gardiner married Bo'ness Oct 1830.)

Don't know if this will help ....   Meg

Hi
I'm looking for monument inscriptions for the Reid, Lees, Morrison and Shaw families in Bathgate Cemetery-I live in NZ so can't get to see myself-anyone have access to this info or know where I can get it from?
From 1850-1998
Elizabeth Shaw/Lees died 1900/01
Robert John Lees 1953
James Reids
Alexander Reids
Any other Lees
Archibald.

Anyone know how to obtain news reports related to inquests on deaths?
Bathgate 1901ish-Elizabeth Shaw/Morrison died in suspicious circumstances involving burns.
Also Prison records-anyone know how to find out out people in Edinburgh jail in 1891?
Stuck at the moment.
Thanks

Thanks

Hello,

I did a search on our local Bathgate Newspaper archive and couldn't find anything on Elizabeth Shaw/Lees.   Tried the Scotsman archive with the same result.   If you get her Death Certificate from Scotlands People, there should be an RCE attached, which would give inquest results and references.

I've checked the pre 1855 Monumental Inscriptions for Bathgate and there are no Lees family listed, there are Reids too numerous to annotate, but feel that they are earlier than your family.   The two Shaw entries don't seem to be connected to your names.   These Inscriptions only cover early burials, West Lothian Family History Society is at present transcribing the burial registers for all of the Bathgate cemeteries, and I think these would contain details of your family, however as this is all voluntary, it could be a year or so before this is available.

In the Fauldhouse, Whitburn internment Registers there are 49 entries for  Lees, too many to list, so would need to tie it down a bit.

The 1891 census would give you the people in prison on census night.

West Lothian Council Cemeteries Department are very helpful, I will phone them and ask for the two names that you have given dates for - Elizabeth Shaw/Lees and Robert John Lees - these records are not computerised, so they need to search through the register books not an easy task without a rough date, eg month and year.

Sorry this isn't very helpful - but will see what I can do.

cheers Meg

Hi
Thanks for your kind help.
29th Jan 1901 is the death I have for Elizabeth Shaw/Lees.
What I have is that she died from burns to the body. Gran knows nothing about it.
Robert Lees was born 1855 in Bo'ness-a tailor and died 1937. He was not with the family in 1901 census but out of prison by then but was in an edinburgh prison-found him in 1891.
Please don't go to any trouble on my behalf.
Very kind of you.
I was trying to pin down where they might be buried.
Late here so off to my bed.
Thanks for your efforts.
Will try to join West Lothian in the next month to help research.

Thanks so much Meg, a great help, we have found out a lot about John and 2 weeks ago went around Edinburgh seeing the areas he lived in. . His son Richard went to Ireland with the GPO and married an Amy Henry. I plan to go to the Post Office Archieves in London to get more information on family members as so many of them worked for the GPO

Thanks again

Whitefox
