Hi,
I wonder if anyone can help? I'm trying to find death/burial record for John Mills born c1781 possibly Glasgow. He was I believe Quarter Master at Blackness Castle around 1808 until some time after 1821. He married Margaret Kidd who is buried with their son Peter, daughter-in-law Janet (Jessie) Morton and granddaughter Jessie in Bo'Ness. I don't know when John died.
Thank you
Aileen

Hello,

I've checked the death/burial records and can't find a death record for John Mills, so entry for him in the Memorial Inscriptions, the entry for Jessie reads:-

Erected by Jessie Mills in memory of her grandmother Margaret Kidd who died 2nd Sept 1872,  and mohter Jessie Morton who died 12th September 1837, father Peter Mills died 29th Dec 18?4, also two daughters who died in infancy.

1841 Census  has:

MORTON   Janet   F   30   Independent    West Lothian
MILLES   Peter   M   35   Merchant    Outside Census County (1841)

1851 Census has Peter Mills, aged 49, head, Merchant, 21 Mills Cottage, Bo'ness born Aberdeen.
daughter Jessie aged 6 at the same address, born Bo'ness with servant Janet Robertson aged 16, born Bo'ness.

That's all I've managed to find.   Hope it's of some help.

cheers ...  Meg

I've just had a look here: http://www.memento-mori.co.uk/92.pdf (Page 9) and the Mills' stone is listed which means it must still there and still legible (Bo'ness 'Lower' Burial Ground)

The index states two MALE children?  ???

Hello Anne,

That seems a better transcription, I took my information from West Lothian Pre 1855 Monumental Inscriptions, which doesn't show Peter's full DOD and the transcription is as noted in that volume of West Lothian MI's.

cheers ...  Meg

Glad to have been able to help!

I find the Mitchell's books great for research, but unfortunately, there's a good number of errors in them. Mind you, they didn't have the luxury of digital cameras back in the 60's/70's, so presumably they must have noted all the MI's down 'on the spot'.

Good luck in finding the stone!

Anne

I have just spent an hour or three in the South Kirk graveyard in Whitburn looking for Wad(d)el(l)s and Stor(r)i/e(y)s. I found the stone I was most interested in and the *********** thing is almost illegible. So if it was legible when the MI book was compiled, I would dearly love to know what it says, please. It's the table stone with details of the Waddel family of Hollhouseburn, including Eliza Beugo, Agnes Wilson and Kath Steel. Thank you in anticipation.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
