Marriage in Camberwell Look up Please?
« on: Saturday 22 July 06 18:00 BST (UK) »
Hello
I am trying to confirm the date of marriage of my grandparents. William Alfred Thompson and Alice Clara Isted. They were married in Camberwell (was it Surrey or London then) in 1926 and I think I have the reference 1d 1363 but it's a bit difficult to read. My nan always said she was married on Christmas day - could that be possible? Many thanks for any help offered.

Hi Cotswoldhills,

I've  seen a mariage cert for Christmas Day; so could be right.

I'm sure your nan would remember the day!

Buying the certificate will confirm it.

Hi

The reference for the marriage is Dec 1926 Camberwell 1383.

The simplest way to find the date of the marriage is by ordering the certificate.

I believe it was quite common in the 19th century (and earlier) for marriages to take place on Christmas Day. I have no direct experience/evidence of marriages on Christmas Day in the 20th century but think it is quite possible!

Hi
Thank you for confirming that it could be Christmas day. I only have childhood memories of her saying Christmas day and sadly she is no longer here to ask.

One set of grandparents married on 26th December 1926 and a great aunt married on Christmas Day in 1924.  I asked my mother about this and she said that this often happened because the family was gathering for a big party anyway so it made sense to combine the two events.  Also it saved on the catering front.  ;)
