1841 Census Lookup, Please.. NICHOLLS.
« on: Thursday 20 July 06 02:17 BST (UK) »
I am searching for my great, great, great, grandparents William NICHOLLS and Ann BERRY.

They married in South Molton, Devon, 16th April, 1832.

They are not on  any Census in Devon.

However the 1851 Census shows what would appear to be the family at St Mary Whitechapel.

HO107/1545  FOLIO  117  PAGE  29
William Nicholls  Head   Mar  39 Carpenter  Devon  Northam
Ann Nicholls   Wife  Mar  39  Devon  South Molton
William Nicholls Son  13  Scholar   Devon  South Molton
Ann Matilda Nicholls  10   Scholar  Devon  South Molton.
Elizabeth Nicholls   Daur  8  Scholar  Middlesex   Limehouse.

I am wondering if they were already in Middlesex by the time of the 1841 Cenus.

This is the only information which I have about the family.

Any help will be most appreciated.

What is "Limehouse"?

Thank you.
Narelle.

Hi Narelle

Firstly, Limehouse is a section or suburb of the city of London, on the north bank of the Thames river.  Some say that the name came from the number of sailors of "Limeys" disembarking there, but in fact is was the site of lime kilns used by potteries in London.

Secondly I have found your family in some other Census and have included these here :-

1841 Census shows William the son living with his BERRY grandparents

1841 Census England Devonshire South Moulton
HO107/235/9   Folio  5   Pages 2 & 3
South Street

BERRY
George 60 Occupation Unreadable
Jane 70
William 3

All where born in the County of Devonshire.  I have not yet found William and Ann.

1861 Census England Middlesex Whitechapel North
RG9/269  Folio  96  Page  30
Red Lion Public House

NICHOLLS
William Head Wid 43 Carpenter Devon Potren
Ann Matilda Dau Unmarr 20 Dressmaker Devon Potren
Elizabeth Dau Unmarr 18 Middlesex Limehouse

A check of the UK BMD shows and Ann NICHOLLS death in 1852 in Stepney which contains the district of Limehouse.

Ann Matilda NICHOLLS married in 1862 to either a James C MATTHEW or a Frederick HOWARD.

Hope that this helps a bit

Cheers
