1871 Lookup please - E(a)gan
« on: Wednesday 19 July 06 22:49 BST (UK) »
William Egan and Bridget (nee Judge) were Irish Catholics who were in Trimdon (perhaps Trimdon Grange) around 1871. It is possible that William had died by the date of the census, as the baptismal record for Mary Ann Egan on 28 Aug 1871 shows only Bridget Egan as parent, whereas earlier births in 1869 showed both parents.
If the 1881 census is to be believed, Bridget Egan was born in 1831 in Ireland.
There may have been other Egans in Trimdon at the same time, perhaps siblings of William.
If anyone can locate William or Bridget, it would demolish a long standing brick wall.
Many thanks,
Terry

Darcy,
Many thanks for your research but I believe this to be the other Egans in the area; neither the husband or children match. I wonder if she has been admitted to the workhouse somewhere nearby. If I have the story so far correct, she is pregnant and has probably lost her husband recently; she has recently lost twins; I was hoping she would turn up as a lodger somewhere.
Thanks again,
Terry

Hi
What are the names of William and Bridgets children?

There is a Bridget aged 42 in Bradford Yorkshire children listed as Bridget Ellen and Michael?

Cal,
Sorry to be slow responding - we have been up in Scotland. I have double checked; at the time of the 1871 census Bridget should have been without children. All those I have discovered  born in Trimdon Grange had died by Dec 1869. There may have been others but the family folk lore is that Mary Ann (with whom she was pregnant at the time of the census) was the only child.
Thanks for your help.

There were other Eagan/Egan couples having children in the Trimdon area:

James and Maria, Thomas and Bridget,  William and Margaret.

Burial:  Bridget Egan, Trimdon, age 53 on  26 Feb 1891

Hi Janis,
Many thanks for that; I suspect that the Bridget Egan buried in 1891 is the wife of Thomas (see Darcy's note above), who was 34 in April twenty years earlier. I believe that 'my' Bridget was living with James Fahey at Fylands Bridge in 1881 and had married him by 1891 (Whitworth), although I cannot find trace of the marriage.
If you have the burial records for Trimdon, is it possible (pretty please) for you to look up the deaths of Michael Egan (b. 20 May 1867), Maria Teresa and Catherine Ann (both b. 6 Nov 1869) and William Egan (the father) who seems to have died by 28 Aug 1871.
Best wishes,
Terry
