PEPPIATT/PEPPITT/PETTITT Family
« on: Wednesday 19 July 06 07:38 BST (UK) »
I have traced my family to a Thomas Peppiatt who married Rebecca Ashton in Sharnbrook on 12 Sep 1796.  The name goes through many different spellings.
Is there anyone with similar intersts in tracing the Peppiatt/Peppitt/Pettitt  family or the Ashton family?  Joseph Pettit moved    to Pertenhall prior to 1820. The name subsequently changed to Peppitt.

Thanks, marp

I have an Elizabeth Peppiatt Spickett b 1837 who is my lovely brick wall .With a name like that I'll forgive her.I'll dig out her file after tea and send you some info on her.
I vaguely remember there being an Elizabeth Peppiatt on the 1841 census living in either gt or Lt Brickhill an elderly lady living next door to Elizabeth 1837.

Thank you for the information on the Peppiatt/Peppitt family.  My line begins with Thomas Peppiatt married to Rebecca Ashton in Sharnbrook in 1796.  Their son Joseph Pettit (the spelling was very variable) moved to Pertenhall, Bedfordshire and married Mary Ayres in Pertenhall in January 1820. They had about 9 children and it is interesting to view the parish register of Pertenhall as the spelling of the name seems to change with each child.  However the descendents of those children called themselves Peppitt.
One of the sons of Joseph and Mary was David born in 1823  in Pertenhall.  He married an Elizabeth Packwood of Dean in 1848 and they  moved to Chesterfield, Derbyshire.  David is my gg grandfather. My branch of the family seem to stay in Derbyshire.  I would be happy to share any links with Joseph Pettite and Mary Ayres, or moving back a generation that of Thomas Peppiatt.

Am interested in Peppitt family history and/or connections. My Maiden name is Peppitt.

Would like to hear from you....

We know that the name originates in the North east of France near the German Border.

Your Thomas P [who m Rebecca ASHTON in 1796] does not appear on the 1803 Muster [National Defence] for 1803 in Sharnbrook..if he was under 55 he should be listed!

Did they raise their children elsewhere? Or had he died young?  This name appears a lot in North Beds [various spellings] in the 1803 Musters [which have luckily survived for most of North Beds]

Cathy, thanks for the information regarding the Bedforshire archives.  I searched for the name Peppitt and that came up with a list of people of that name from  Pertenhall, Bedfordshire.  They are, no doubt, distant relatives and descendents of Joseph Peppitt born in 1797 in Sharnbrook (son of Thomas Peppiatt and Rebecca Ashton)  who married Mary Ayres in January 1820 in Pertenhall, and died there 21 November 1879.

I visited Pertenhall a few years ago and found headstones in the churchyard of my Peppitt relatives there, and also visited with an elderly lady who was a Peppitt and had some information regarding the Pertenhall branch of the family.

However, I was even more interested in the idea of checking the Muster (national defence)  for certain towns.  How is this done?  Can it be done on-line? I have to do most of my searching on-line as I live in Australia!

Thomas Peppiatt would have been under 55 in 1803 so should have appeared on the Muster lists unless he died young.

Any further information would be much appreciated.
