Hit a brick wall = Trying to find parents of George Jones
« on: Saturday 15 July 06 20:03 BST (UK) »
I am trying to locate information on my stepmothers father (who she never knew and is desperate to find out about). His name was George Jones believed born in 1894 was  married 26 Jan 1925 in Woolwich London to an Ada STUDD and died in Whitehouse Common Road, SUTTON COLDFIELD on 1 January 1943. The informant was a Fanny SMALL of the same address. His occupation was a fitter (Office of Works) so maybe there might be some way of finding details from that angle. His father was a Thomas George JONES but that is all we know. Maybe if someone has access to the local deaths notices in a paper that would give us some more information to go on. The death was recorded on 2 January 1943.

Did you really search the 1891 census Jim or was that just a slip of the keyboard?  :)

Hi. The reason for believing he came from Warwickshire was that my stepmother was always told "he went back to where he came from". Given that he died in Sutton Coldfield I hoped that I may be able to find his obitory which might give me a clue.

His death certificate gives no indication of where he was born and the marriage certificate placed him in Woolwich London. My stepmother was never allowed to mention her father at home so she is desperate to try and find some information.

I knew it was going to be trouble when I found out what his name was :-)

He was aged 48 when he died on 1 Jan 1943 so that gives him a year of birth of 1894 so the first census he should appear in would have been 1901.

I have tried to find out if there was a electoral roll taken in 1942 but was told one was not. If you can suggest any other course of actions that would be great.

Thanks

Ian

Hi zbend

Do you have the marriage cert for George....and if so...can you tell me what his father did for a living? It will be on the cert.

I have found a George with a father Thomas on the 1901 census.....Thomas is in the building trade...A builders foreman carpenter.....living in the Ladywood area of Birmingham.....Also George has a middle initial..F....born about 1895

Let me know if you want details of 1901.

Good luck in your search
Indi

Hi Again - Must say I am very impressed with this web site and service :)

George's father Thomas was described as a Warehouseman on the marriage certificate and George as a Fitter.

Is it possible that he never declared his middle initial when he married or when the death was recorded? I suppose that is possible but it is all very exciting and yes I would love the details please.

Hi Ian,

Hmm...I doubt that this is your stepmoms family but I will give you the details anyway.

I would think that a Foreman (Carpenter) is a pretty prestigious job and would doubt that Thomas somehow became a warehouseman...although...you never know!

Also .....It would be odd for George to not be called by his full name (middle initial..if he had one) on his death cert.

Anyway..here they...but I have been thinking about this one and I wonder if "he went back to were he came from" could mean the Midlands in general..as opposed to London?
If so....that is quite a bit of land to cover....Warks, Staffs, Worcs, Leics, Notts....!...Yikes!

1901 Census
387 Monument Rd, Birmingham
Thomas Jones Head 41 Builders Foreman (Carpenter) Denby Abergele
Clara Jones Wife 37 Warks, Birmingham
Thomas Jones Son 16 Letterpress Printer's App Warks, Birmingham
John E. Jones Son 8 Warks, Birmingham
George F. Jones Son 6 Warks, Birmingham
Phoebe Jones Dau 3 Warks, Birmingham
RG13/2826 Folio 6 Page 4

If you leave this with me for a few days...I will go through the other Midland's counties in 1901 and see if I can find a George with a Tom dad who is a Warehouseman
No promises

Cheers
Indi
