Ian,

He could be buried in Sutton Coldfield Cemetery and his burial record could provide some more clues.  This is the website:

What happened to his wife Ada?

Thanks for that reference. I have asked for a search and certified copy. Just hope he is there!

It is a very complicated story this one but I do know about Ada. Ada split from George in 1933 not long after their daughter (my stepmother) was born. At the time they were living in Bexley Heath. They never divorced.

In 1943 after the death of George, Ada remarried a William Terry and went on to have another 2 daughters and a son. My Stepmother was never allowed to discuss her father so it would appear there is something exciting lurking in the background  ;)

The dates all tie up with other facts so I am confident I have the right George.

My Stepmother was only ever told 'he went back to where he came from' and then we were able to find his death in Sutton Coldfield. The rest of his life and history is a mystery - at the moment!

Ada died on 21 Sept 1989 in Poole.

Research is not helped because evidently the electoral rolls were not taken in the war years  :'(

Can anyone advise me on Georges' occupation. On his death certificate he is shown as being: Fitter (Office of works). Is this probable it was for the local authority and if so is it possible that records may still exist somewhere?

Thanks

I have now received the information from the cemetery in Sutton Coldfield. I need to find out if there is a headstone on the plot.

Unfortunately the Lady I spoke to was just standing in and has been unable to find the right plot.

Any ideas?
