Thanks for the link to ScotlandsPeople and thanks for the info on the William Geddes of Banff. Someone included the 1718 William Geddes (Gaddis) on their family tree in ancestry.com a few years ago and it has been picked up and copied to many family trees since then. I doubted the veracity of it but did not know how to check it until I just ran across RootsChat. Glad I did.
