Alverstoke Burlals

Hi,

I'm hunting for the graves of 8 members of the Calland family buried between 1754 and 1800. I know they were buried in Alverstoke but they are not in St. Mark's or St. Mary's. Can anyone suggest any more graveyards in the area?

If any of your family were in  the navy, they could be buried in the naval cemetery in Haslar Hospital or the naval cemetery in Alverstoke, there used to be a small cemetery on the corner of Green Road Alverstoke, this road runs alongside St Marys Church, the records are kept at the main cemetery Anns Hill, Anns Hill Road, They also have all the burial records of this cemetery, your ancesters could be in Anns Hill.

Please excuse me for butting in, I have asked Brig and she doesn't mind. 

I have Callens in Hampshire in my tree and I wondered if there are any on the Hampshire Burial Index.   

Brig and I are friends and it would be lovely to see if we can trace our two trees back far enough to see if they are related as the names and places are so close.

Hi John,

Thanks for all that wonderful information. Some I'd got but a couple are new to me. Could I have the phone number for Ann's Hill? I reckon they aren't in there as apparently it didn't exist until about 1800 but there again they might be able to help me.  I know they weren't a Naval family, they were just pretty rich people from London.

A lot of the Callands were christened in the Holy Trinity in Gosport. Did they ever have burials? I wonder if perhaps they were buried in there. John senior was known in his will as John of Alverstoke but all the land he owned was off South St. in Gosport. He also held the mortgage for a pub in Fareham.

Me again,

I've just checked on a Gosport Discovery Centre site and have noticed that they have records for burials at Holy Trinity for 1696-1902. John do you know what happened to all the graves? I only saw one last time I walked past. I'll be down again this coming weekend perhaps I'm missing something!!

There were also a couple of other churches in Gosport I should perhaps try. I wish I'd found them in St. Mark's, what a beautiful little cementery, lovingly restored.

 Holy Trinity did have it's own cemetery but was leveled some years ago, the church is in South Street. The Burial records I believe are on fiche in Gosport library, I will check next time I go into town.

Thanks for the link, it's a great site.

It's the first time I've heard a library called anything quite so posh! Where I work it's called a Learning Access Centre but it will always be a library to me.

I bet my lot were in Holy Trinity so I'll visit the Discovery Centre one day soon.

Erm.... where did you get that info from?  The burial index would have been compiled from the Burial registers, not memorial inscriptions.  Since you are talking about 200+ years ago, is it possible that there are no headstones/memorial inscriptions which survive, but your family are buried in the churchyard?
