Silo / Luigi (or Louis) Marriage 1820's
« on: Tuesday 11 July 06 20:45 BST (UK) »
Modesto Silo born in Lemna Italy on November 1, 1803 immigrated in 1817.  I am trying to find out if this is the same person who married Mary Jane Luigi or Louis likely in the Belfast area some time in the 1820's.  The first child of the couple could be George Louis Silo who was born circa 1830.

Any help located a record of marriage for either Modesto or Mary Jane or birth record for George would be appreciated!    :D

Hello.

The Griffiths Valuation Index has the following record for Modesto:

County:      Antrim
Parish:      Shankill
Location:      Cromac Townparks
Address:                  Upper Arthur Street
Comments:   and Sons

The comments noted are used as a means of distinguishing this individual from others with similar names.  Comments vary widely and may include: the name of an ancestor (typically father or mother), the individual's occupation or family trade, the name of the family dwelling, skills associated with the individual, religious affiliation, as well as physical or moral characteristics of his or her ancestors.

In some instances the comments indicate joint ownership of the property with other individuals.  Joint ownership is indicated by the word "and" either followed by a generic reference to other individuals, or separating the names of the joint owners.

The Civil Registration has the following references that may be your SILO
ancestors, let me know if you want the details.

This is the information I have found on the Silo family in N Ireland, there were two brothers Andrew and Modesto  who emigrated to Ireland from Italy, first record I have of is Andrew in 1826. Could you send sources of Modesto birth and ship that he used to come to Ireland in 1817? Do you know when Andrew his brother was born?

Yours John Rogers

SILO, Andrew, Carver, Gilder, and Looking Glass Seller, 17 Cornmarket, 1826-1836. 27 Castle-street, Belfast 1837-1842. Ferry-quay, Londonderry 1845-1846. It is probable that the Silo family emigrated from Italy via England to Northern Ireland in the late 1820s. The family is first mentioned in the Manchester Trade Directories from the early 1800s; Sillo and Co, Carver, Gilder,  Picture Frame Makers, 15 High-street, Manchester 1799-1802 (Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, pp 814). A.S. returns his sincere thanks for the liberal support which he has experienced during his last nine years, and hopes, by attention to business, and keeping only the best materials, to merit a continuance of public patronage. Belfast 31st December 1835 (BN-L 1836, 5th Jan). Silo voted in one Belfast City election in the 1830s on 5th August 1837 for two seats: Earl of Belfast and James Gibson (PRONI D/2472/1).
SILO, Modesto Snr, Carver, Gilder and Looking Glass Seller, 21 Cornmarket, 1831-1846. 11 Arthur-square and 25 Gloucester-street 1850-1852. 6 Donegall-place 1855-1856. 43 Upper Arthur-street, Belfast 1860-1862 (in partnership with Modesto Silo Jnr). He registered to vote for Belfast City elections in Jan 1837 (PRONI D/2472/1). Modesto and Andrew Silo were empanelled to Jury Duty in a Case concerning a Guiseppe Corsini, who was indicted for stealing 12 handkerchiefs (BN-L, 1837, 31st October). From Feb to May 1840 he worked on the gilding the tabernacle at the Catholic church of Ballymacarrett (BN-L, 1840 15th May). Six years later he advertised in the Belfast New-Letter: Arrival of Good From Paris. Modesto Silo. Begs leave respectfully to announce to the nobility, gentry, and inhabitances of Belfast and vicinity that he has received a large stock of Louis the XIV frames, so celebrated for their beauty of design and pattern, from the House of Bourquin and Co, Boulevard, Bonne Nouvelle, Paris. He begs an early inspection when he has no doubt they will meet the approbation of the public. Hi John - I picked up your response from the Italian site as well - thanks for your diligence!!!

I received information from a distant cousin who still lives in the Lemna region of Italy that Andrea Domenico Silo  was born Feb. 20, 1792 and Modesto Santino Silo was born November 1, 1803.  They had a sister Maria who did not immigrate with them.  It is not known how they travelled to Ireland.

I am planning a trip to Belfast in July and would like to be able to track down the graves of Modesto Sr who passed away January 14, 1892 and his son, George Louis Silo passed away December 20, 1899.  I thought to check online newspapers for obituaries around those dates but can't find access to the archives - do you have a link for the Belfast Newsletter that you might be able to send me?  Or do you have any other ideas?  I'd like to do as much research from here in Ontario as possible.

Thanks again for all the information above.  I will take it to show my mother (a born Silo and 85 years old!).

To access the Belfast New-Letter I have to go the National Library of Ireland and access their computers. I go to website; http://www.bl.uk/reshelp/findhelprestype/news/newspdigproj/ndproject/ (The 19th Century British Library Newspaper website, managed by Gale Cengage, was launched on 22 October 2007, with 1,000,000 pages of content).
Yours John

I was thrilled to read about Carlo Silo who was my great grandfather. What was the name of the hotel he owned in Belfast? His daughter was my grandmother Lucie Evelin Burke (nee Silo) and my father was called Carlo Gallee after his maternal grandfather. My father was the youngest of eight and was born and bred in Holywood Co Down. I would like to know if there is a Jasper Silo and a Frank Silo. We also have vague info on a French connection Lucy Lefevre born 1864 died 1943. My father remembered this great aunt very well.

There's a birth (1876) for Jasper Joseph Silo and marrage (1920) for Jasper Silo.
See index to civil registrations for full details and to search for others-
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=collectionDetails;t=searchable;c=1408347

IGI (www.familysearch.org) lists birth- Jasper Joseph Silo born 2 Feb.1876 Belfast district, son of Carlo and Mary Josephin Burke (daughter Mary Jane born 1870 also).

There's Will Extracts from PRONI (think they've been mentioned before)-
www.proni.gov.uk/index/search_the_archives/will_calendars/wills_search.htm

Co. Antrim & Co. Down 1911 census now online (free)- Jasper's listed there as well as other relatives.
