Moving upmarket or just moving?
« on: Tuesday 11 July 06 10:25 BST (UK) »
A rellie of mine married and had a few children in the Myton registration district in the 1880s/90s. He was an apprenticed shipwright and moved to Cottingham. Obviously without addresses it is difficult to be precise, but would anyone with a knowledge of those areas at that time be able to hazard a guess as to the reason for the move? Increasing the size of the family from 3 to 5 children may be one reason, but I wondered if this was an early case of the wife deciding the family needed to make a step up in the world and move to a better district? This chap was the son of humble labourers and as a shipwright, it seems he had improved himself.

Any thoughts on this will be most welcome.
Thanks
Nick

Hi Nick

My guess is that the family moved 'upmarket', as Hull expanded a lot of the well to do merchants moved their families to Cottingham for better living conditions.

Have you got this family on any census, what is the family name?

I have spent a lot of time in Cottingham in the past visiting relatives so maybe with a bit more info I might be able to help a bit more.

The family were James and Jemima Carver and their children were Eliza A who married an Ezra Rhodes, Esther who married Sidney Ombler and Charles K who married Ruby Sharp. The marriages of the children took place in 1909, 1915 and 1918 respectively. I haven't found marriages for Beatrice or James, both of whom were born in late 1880s, but this could just be due to the absence of a transcribed record. They were in Cottingham in 1901 but I do not have that census image. Any background info would be most welcome.

Thanks

Hi Nick

The 1901 census shows John, Jemima + family living at 49 Abbey Street, Hull.  Abbey Street is off Holderness Road and a photo of it can be seen at http://prismdata.hullcc.gov.uk/gallery/main.php

I have Kelly's Directory for 1905 and they are no longer in Abbey Street but I can't see them mentioned in the Cottingham section

Hope this helps a little

Hi Bee

Found them in 1891 census at 10 Sharp St in Cottingham. Does that mean anything?

Tks

Hi

As you say the 1891 does show the family at Sharp Street but this is were it gets confusing.

Sharp Street is off Newland Avenue in HULL but back then the Newland Avenue area was classed under the parish of Cottingham.

So it looks as though your family never moved out of Hull, but why they moved from Sharp St to Abbey St is anyone's guess but most likely to be nearer to his place of work.  Personally I would have gone the other way round  ;)

No surprises that my rellies do exactly the opposite of everyone else. It's a family trait.

Hi,

I was born 3 streets down from Sharp Street (in Lambton Street)  My father worked for a builder in Sharp Street for many years.  There were residential houses at the top, nearest to Newland Avenue, but there were several businesses with yards and offices at the bottom.
Nothing to do with shipwrights though - nowhere near the river, sea or any other water!

Hi Nick
In case you were not already aware the abbey street and sharp street addresses are still standing. My husband works in one of those builders yards at bottom of sharp street and passes several times a day. If it would help would be happy to take a pic and email it to you. Let me know if any use to you?
Best wishes
Debbie
