Would it be possible for someone to see if they can find a Bertram Turner in Crockfords please?  He was born in Liverpool c1907, so guess he went into the ministry around 1930-50.  Probably stayed in Liverpool but not sure.  Any info would be appreciated.  Many thanks. R.

I have just logged in to ask the question"How would I find out if an ancestor was a clergyman" and here is this wonderful post!What a great database - however not much luck for me.

My oldest Aunt who is supplying me with loads of wonderful memories and info said that she is certain that we had a Vicar in the family,she said she can remember her Aunts saying things like"make sure your face is clean because Uncle Joe is coming"and he used to come in a funny shaped cart.
My Aunt was born in 1927,and the name of the Uncle is Joseph Southwick.
If anyone could help out with that I would be grateful,thank you

Hi Bagpuss, hopefully someone will look in Crockfords for you, but I think you can access this clerical directory in some libraries.  Also try googling for him because you never know what may turn up!
An afterthought.......you could possibly contact the dioceson office of which ever area you think he served in....but, have you considered the possibility that he may not have been an anglican but maybe methodist?   Regards. R.

I can't ascertain it's the same person, but I'm told by an older member of the congregation of St. John the Evangelist  Ravenhead (Church of England) that Rev. Bertram Turner was a Curate at the church. Unfortunately I don't know any dates, but again Crockfords can help with that. I know he doesn't appear in a 1998 copy of the publication.

1887 newspaper sys he was Curate of the new church
1891 address Boscombe Parsonage RG12/903 fo 34 p 14 Area Church of Eng Mintr (what is the significance ot the word Area?
1918 his son's marriage certificate has father Henry "Clerk in Holy Orders"

Don't  these terms indicate Church of England?

Christ Church. - This new church, situated in the Drummond Road, Boscombe, was  formally opened on Monday by religious services, conducted by the curate in charge, the Rev. Henry Ebben, who for nine years has been assisting the vicar of the church and parish of St. Luke's, Hackney.

But the Record Office tell me "our archive catalogue and found no reference to Henry
Ebben. "

"iFurther searches of the Hampshire Advertiser revealed that the iron church was Christ Church, of which we have no records. " but then "Christ Church is listed as a place of worship in the 1895 Hampshire directory - with the Rev Henry Ebben"
 I am confused  Have they any record of him or not the email is contradictory to say the least can any one help please
