Hi marp

Additional information is hard to come by.  There is

burial Ashover 5/6/1673 John son of John Cantrill of Woodthorpe
burial Ashover 17/7/1695 Thomas of the parish of North Wingfield
burial Ashover 20/1/1704 Elizabeth wife of John of Fallgate (wife of John the myner?)

DRO 25/3/1707 lease by the Duke of Shrewsbury to Israel Cantrill yeoman 1/3 part of 2 messuaes and 54 acres 26 perches at Stretton for 21 years £9 6s 8d pa

I cannot find a burial or marriage for Rachel bpt 1656 dau of Thomas and Mary (if she didn't marry Sam Hurt)

Do you have any thoughts on 'nephew John Calton' from the 1717 will?

Hi, DesigerJeans,   I am sorry but I really do not find the Free Reg listing as particularly sound.  I have checked and checked FindmyPast, FamilySearch and Ancestry/  No baptism for Rachel Cantrill can be locatd. The closest I could get was a baptism at Repton  (father Henry) in 1660.

I think we need something a bit more positive (eg a parish record) in the way of proof regarding the baptism and parentage of Rachel Cantrill.  I think we have to take John Cantrill's will as authrentic.  It may be found on FindmyPast.

I am sorry but I do not accept the "baptism" record you sent me as a ttue one.  This means of course that I do not accept she was she daughter of Thomas and Mary.   So good hunting everyone!

I  have not given up the search.
Cheers, marp

cheers, marp

Whilst looking for something else on findmypast.co.uk I have stumbled on an indenture dated 11th October in the third year of the reign of William and Mary (so 1692) between Thomas Cantrill miner of Milltown, Ashover and his son Israel.  Israel is to lodge and clothe his father in return for his property in Ashover.  There is also mention of Israel's daughter Eliz Lee and Ann Calton and lots of other detail.

This is followed by an admon dated 1696/7 Israel Cantrill of North Wingfield and a further document in Latin.

Thomas Cantrill of the parish of North Wingfield was buried at Ashover 17/7/1695

Findmypast has the items listed under location South Wingfield.

Many, many thanks for this piece of information Designer Jeans.  Sorry I have not responded sooner and I owe you an apology by sticking to the erroneous piece  of information regarding the  parents of israel, John and Rachel.

Thanks also for the South Wingfield hint.  I have learnt that FindmyPast is very useful provided you give correct information!!

I am now putting to rights my family tree regarding the Cantrills of Ashover in the 1600s.  I hope no more mistakes are made.

Cheere, marp

Hi marp

It was a totally random, extremely lucky find which pulls things together beautifully!  Do you happen to know anyone who can transcribe the latin document?

If you have a copy of the document, you can scan it to your AI program, and it might be able to transcribe it for you. I did a will that was done in old handwriting, and it worked for that. Just started messing around with this AI stuff. It's interesting, but still need to verify the info.
